TRAINZ HAS FAILED!

SuperSpeedMaglev

Wonderfully Old Fashioned
I cancelled a patching of Trainz yesterday.(Monday) And today it's not working at all!
The Launcher dosen't work, and I when I launch it in Bin it dosen't work at all.
Just shows a blury image of the loading screen.

And that's what you can expect when you cancel a patch, no way out other than re-installing. Never ever cancel a patch, must have been said thousands of times on here by now, leave it to finish even if it takes hours.

Edit: your content will be OK if you copy the local and original folder somewhere and paste them back afterwards and run a QDR.

Unfortunately, you will have to reinstall your version I'm afraid. Back up your <trainz install folder>/UserData folder first though.

Shane

The short answer is, stopping the patch mid way has trashed your install. Only option is probably to completely uninstall (if you can) then reinstall from scratch.

The important folder you need to back up is the UserData folder. Copy or move it so it's not in the Trainz installation folder.

Shane

Once you have copied the UserData folder elsewhere, I would advise using the uninstaller if it works, failing that it will be a case of deleting the Trainz install folder then reinstalling.

Well compared to most game patches which expedite in a few seconds or several minutes at best, N3V have a bit of a behemoth with theirs.

Well what would you expect? The patcher was writing over files when you stopped the process. You were told here a few times to leave it along while it did it's thing. As has been said already, all you can do is reinstall after you've copied your data to a safe place.

Perhaps a solution to this would be that once the patch is started the cancel button either should disappear or be grayed out. Maybe with a message warning that patch must be run to completion?

Good idea but to simple, people will use task manager to shut patching down even though they could also use it to see the patch is still running.

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps there should be a big flashing, bold, blinking message with a hammer that comes out to bop the user on the head if they try to cancel the patch. Then again they'd hit the OFF switch or reset and kill it anyway. :)

Indeed. There are ways of preventing closing of an application unless certain conditions are met, but it's not the simplest thing to code (although N3V should be able to do it).

Interestingly though, for newer TS12 patches at least, they do have a rollback facility but even that takes time to do.

That's right - the CTRL-ALT-DEL function can be disabled using group policy scripts. I'm not an expert at this, but I did it once. :)

I wonder if he canceled during the rollback. That would surely cause things to become messed up.
