Trainz for the Mac

I have an iMac computer and want to run my Trainz software on it. Does anyone on the forum have experience with using "Trainz for Mac" as opposed to using "Trainz for Microsoft" with Bootcamp installed on the Mac? Are there advantages of using the Microsoft version? Is the content any different or better? And does anyone have a preference? Any help for my decision would be appreciated. Thank you, boxcar35billy.M:o

Hi,

Trainz for Mac is the same as TS2010. TS:Mac is slightly buggier than the PC version. I'd probably run the PC version on Bootcamp, then you will have the same version as the rest, and if you decide to install the Multiplayer beta, you can use multiplayer with other TS2010 users.

Also, I think it is a bit harder to get the add-ons working correctly on the Mac version, and I am not sure if TS:Mac comes with Content Manager or not.

Just my 5 cents.

TS Mac has a content manager. It doesn't have the ability to save CDPs. As far as fixing older content, you can edit them, you lose the PEV tools though. As far a buggier than the Windows version, I find the Mac version runs better and with less bugs than TS12. If I had the option to turn AA and shadows off, it would run better than TS12 through bootcamp on my hardware. As it stands, I get the same basic framerate between the two with the above options turned off in TS12.*

I run TS Mac on a Macbook Pro 17", 2.16 Core Duo with 2 GB Ram and x1600 256 MB video card. (One of the first Intel Macs) I get acceptable framerates on my routes (I don't download other's). If I could turn off shadows, I would be very happy with it. I do run it in windowed mode at 1280 by 800, all sliders set to normal and draw distance at 3000.*

Even though I find it better than TS12, I'm still using TRS06 mostly. Full screen, all sliders maxed and no hicups even with five trains in the scene. Yes, I know I need a computer upgrade, this one is five years old. See no reason to when newer versions of Trainz is the only program I have it stumbles with. I can fix that by running an older one that does work.

Okay guys, thanks so much for your responses and interest. Hearing your comments, I think I will go the Bootcamp route. Cheers, boxcar35billy

Yes and no. Trainz Simulator Mac is most similar to TS12 on Windows, but has content equivalent to TS2010 on Windows and lacks the "satellite view" from TS12 on Windows.

I would agree with sparky15 here; the Trainz Simulator Mac code is similar to TS12 with some additional fixes that haven't been released on Windows yet. The content is similar to TS2010 with all service packs installed and some additional fixes and improvements. I don't think that it's correct to say that it has more bugs than any given PC version, even if that was a meaningful metric.

Also, I think it is a bit harder to get the add-ons working correctly on the Mac version...

This is true; we don't have any supported add-on packs for the Mac at the current time.

...and I am not sure if TS:Mac comes with Content Manager or not.

It does not come with the same "Content Manager" that Windows users are familiar with, but it does offer similar capabilities.

kind regards,

chris

By add-ons I mean DLS and third-party, not the DLC stuff.

"I would agree with sparky15 here" - Hello! You were quoting me, not him!

But anyway, thanks for the better insight.

problems with CM

I am new to trainz mac ,and i have a big doubt about it... Once you have a third party scenery installed via importing a cdp file to CM ,you can see the built in or installed kuids with the right click mouse options..but how can you see the missing dependencies ??? i have installed la robla route ,the content manager lists 300 kuids in black, but more than 600 appear in the config.txt of that scenery,
thanks in advance for your help!

Right click on installed content and there should be a 'View Dependancies' option. Also, try 'View Errors and Warnings'- it may be that it can't locate something.

With regard to trainz mac, I have around 100 things that are faulty or missing dependancies in some way. It's very frustrating knowing that only 2/3rds of what you download from the DLS will actually work.

Also, my mac has 8GB ram and an intel i5 processor and it still struggles with the ECML route. I never use that one anymore, it's absurdly big- what's modelled is excellently done, but there's so so much wasted space on it.
