Trainz Community Web Ring Update

After several weeks of negotiation, Bravenet, the hosting service for the Trainz Community Web Ring have finally allowed me access to the admin area. As mentioned in previous posts on this forum, about 70% of the web ring listings are dead. The coding also contained several loopholes that enabled people to make multiple clicks, thus allowing a site to be pushed closer to the top of the listings. There wasn't any search facility that I know of, so sites located at the bottom of the listing were seldom, if ever accessed.

I lost interest in the web ring a long time ago (maybe 2004) when I became very ill. I passed the site on to another person who's name I don't recall, but it seems that it was only maintained for a short period after that. On visiting the admin area today, I was shocked and surprised to see no less than 1,500 new applications awaiting approval. That's over 15 times more sites that the web ring currently promotes. I'm sure that a large percentage of the sites awaiting approval have since died, but I will still check every one and add any sites that still exist to the Trainz Resources Directory. If you own a site and requested that it be listed in the web ring, I will eventually find you, but you can speed things up by contacting me first. (Please check to see if your site is already listed first) If I check ten sites a week it could take up to 3 years before I find you. Don't wait, please post your site here and I'll list it for you in the next upload.

Site owners who have a web ring logo on their home page are asked to remove it as soon as possible. When the Trainz Resources Directory finally goes live, I will contact all site owners and ask them to place a link to the directory on their site. You can place a link on your links page any time you like, but the logo will effectively replace the web ring logo. The Directory offers several improvements over the web ring:
  • A bot will check for dead links regularly. Therefore all listed links should be live.
  • Sites are in alphabetical order. As there isn't any reward system, the order will never change.
  • The site has a powerful search engine which people are encouraged to use. Links starting with Z will be as accessible as those starting wit Zero.
  • Site owners are encouraged to view and update their listings with vital key words. This means that if you can't find a site, you can blame the site owner!
  • All foreign language sites will have an English translation link. (still experimental but working fine so far.)
  • Directory listings are already scoring high or top rankings on certain Google search queries.
The web ring did its job for a long time, but it's time for us to all say goodbye.

RIP

I hope you're all better now, Johnk. 's Good to see you're back on it: I'm sure it'll be of great help to fellow Trainzers. :)

Thanks for your kind words. The new site has been operating for a couple of months now and it's already gaining some respect within the Trainz community. (See sig)

I have finally full use of both legs after thirty years of dragging one around behind me. Although my physical problems weren't life threatening, it was very difficult to deal with it mentally. I can now walk 10 to 15 kilometres without too much pain and life is starting to mean something again.

The 1,500 outstanding requests I quoted in my last post were mainly from porn, poker and Viagra sites wanting to be listed. There were a few legitimate requests and it is sad to see that they never made it to the web ring.

Regards,

John

We take things like walking and breathing for granted really, I don't think I could even begin to imagine not being able to walk. Glad to hear you can now! :)

I for one got your site bookmarked. It is handy indeed. Like I said, keep it up!

hey John thanks for getting this back up and running! One thing on my website (www.passtrainz.net) The link has an extra "http://" in it. Also; how does one edit their description for their site and such?
