Trainz Classics 3rd Edition

My son purchased this product for me today, I loaded it and the game "stutters" for a better word the graphics are not very good at all.
My pc specs are,
2 gig ram
Celeron 3.066 ghz processor
Ge Force 6600 Gt Graphics card
I have updated my video driver with no better results.
I also tried lowering the the settings in the options panel ( you know for scenery and all that)
So any suggestion for a rather PC challenged ole fart?
Thanks

I would first try running 'Trainzdiag, exe' , it is a utility program located in the ' Bin Folder '.
Also , try switching from DirectX to OpenGl and/or vice versa .
Hopefully it will show your problem ---,DLR

The built in routes for TC3 need quite a powerful machine. Cheapest upgrade, buy TRS2009 and look at other routes. I suspect you will still have some performance problems.

Your Celeron processor is lacking cache and then it gets interesting to look at the options. The cheapest is to replace your processor with an Intel P4, however they are getting a little rare these days and I think your video card is a little dated.

If you are not skilled in computers then I'd normally suggest a Dell but looking at their Australian site nothing seems to quite fit. The bigger the monitor resolution the more cpu you need to drive it. 1440 by 900 isn't bad resolution with something like a 2 or 5 ms second response.

Think in terms of $1100 to $1700 for a reasonable PC to run Trainz. Dual core would be nice, ideally the newer 45 nm items, they run cooler, 3/4 gigs of memory, separate video card see tomshardware.com for comparison but PCI 2 something like an nVidia GTX 260. Have a look at www.newegg.com and look at the reviews, in general products with lots of reviews that are favourable are the sort of products you want to buy.

Compared to the cost of a model railway this isn't that bad. Many people who have an interest actually go for higher end machines.

www.computeronline.com.au has a section of customised PCs. Or look through the Dell machines, talk to them and see if they will sell you a 1440 by 900 monitor with a machine. You may need to go quad core with Dell to get a decent video card.

Probably some one with better local knowledge could guide you better.

Gents,
Thanks for the replies..
"I would first try running 'Trainzdiag, exe'." I did this and everything came up ok, so no joy there..
"1440 by 900
" This did not improve any either, I also went down as low as 800x600 with no improvement.
I was not in the market for a new PC just now. Do you think a new video card would improve things?
John "Computer Online" that was a good guess, I go there and get my stuff usually so a good call for Canada!
Thanks
Keith

You can go into System via Control Panel and adjust your Page File Size to increase the amount of HDD used as virtual memory.
Also make sure your Resource Cache Size is adjusted to half the available RAM (i.e 1024 Mb).

The Celeron is the bottleneck. I run a P4 2.4 with a high end video card and Trainz isn't too bad.

New P4 3.06s are available but you may have problems locating one in Australia.

Ebay has one or two as well.

As does ebay Australia

buy a new one for preference if you can ubt a used one will probably do the trick. Do get an anti static wrist strap and use it if you decide to pull it yourself and replace the cpu.

Switching the processor is not a job for a total beginner but it isn't an impossible job. The P4 has the cache your processor lacks.

There were two types of cpu Northwood and Prescott Northwood uses less power and some motherboards only support Northwood. A 2.8 Northwood will give you better performance than a 3.0 Celeron. If you could find out what your motherboard is and exactly what it will support that would be sensible. www.crucial.com has a scanner for sorting out memory it may tell you what your motherboard is.

John,
Thanks again for the reply.
I am going to get a 2nd hand P4...
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Pentium-4-3-2Ghz-1M-800-SL7PW-Socket-775-HT-CPU_W0QQitemZ250329304607QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Components?hash=item250329304607&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318
and see how that goes first. The ones you posted were socket 478 where my board is a LGA775.
Cheers and thanks again

I'm missing something here. The only 3.06 Celeron I know of is the 478 socket. If you have an LGA775 socket then your options are much wider. Even a E8500 or Q6600 depending on what your motherboard supports.

John, maybe you would know this. Is the AMD Sempron line the equivalent of the cache-impaired Celerons? I have a AMD Sempron 2600 and my computer doesn't do too well with Trainz. Should I plop in an Athlon?
Thanks,
Mick Berg.

Looking at

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/cpu-charts-2007/Synthetic-3DMark06,341.html I'd say yes.

From memory I'd also say yes but have a dig on the AMD site and tomshardware.com also verify your motherboard can accept the other processor.

I looked it up n both Intel, Newegg and Gigabyte. You are correct, I think it was a transitional product.

  1. Support Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor
  2. Support Intel® Pentium® D Processor
  3. Supports 800/533MHz FSB
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2304

Your cpu options are much wider that I thought. I apologise for missing it. A dual core cpu of some description would be optimal and your motherboard will run one. Unfortunately according to Gigabyte there were five versions of your motherboard and they do not have the supported cpu for any of them. You are limited to FSB 800 by the motherboard. A guess would be E2180 or possibly E4700. It would be a guess though I'm much more comfortable with ASUS motherboards. The E2180 would be the least demanding on your motherboard and would be the one I'd gamble on but it would be a gamble. See if you can dig out some one more knowledgeable in a specialist motherbeoard support forum.

John,
I got the new to me (2nd hand) processor and installed it with some help and it has improved thigs greatly. The game still stutters a bit and I might look at a new video card soon also.
Thanks again for your help...

The processor I got was

Pentium 4 CPU 3.4Ghz HT 3.40 /2M/800 SL7z7 LGA775
3.4 ghz Speed
800mgh FSB
2mb L2 Cache Size
3.4ghz L2 CacheSpeed
