Trainz 2012

Can anyone please help? I've just received a copy of Trainz 2012 and for all the hype about it I'm finding it even harder than 2009 to operate.
I have more than enough computing power to run the game, What I don't have is a clue how to run surveyor beyond the basics.
Can anyone please explain to me what this layering feature is??? How do I change the ambiant light, time of day or even the colour of the water in surveyor ????
Last and by no means least, after regestering my serial number for the new game it still won't let me download anything in content manager.
There is no help at all in the manual that comes with the game that I can find to help with my problems.

Have you set up your login info in the tab for content manager? Look at the
Planet Auran tab. If you entered your login info there, you should be able
to connect to the download station, if your internet is working. You also
need a First Class ticket, or downloading is very slow. I couldn't even get content manager to connect, without buying a First Class Ticket. Hope this helps.

Don't worry too much about layers yet. Some people say they're more trouble than they're worth. Have a look a this excellent tutorial:

GrahamSea has some excellent prototypical signals that do much more than the default ones, but master that tutorial first and you'll be in good shape.
