An unfortunate result, on my system, is that the distant trees look like a collection of sets of leaves. That is each leaf set has a narrow black border which prevents it from visually melding, at a distance, into the overall tree. The result is similar to green cotton balls hung from the branches. As you go out further the blob effect occurs.
Speed trees really needs a slider to allow viewing distance to be adjusted to the customer's PC's capabilities. The arbitrary settings, while preserving FPS, detract from the speed trees more than a few hundred meters from the tree.
Because of the "LOD effect" I usually avoid them and instead use addon trees set back from the track. Slightly blurred trees or hi-definition trees, only close-up, is the compromise.
