trainz 2009 or rail sim?

I'm happy with TS2009. Was never very happy with Rail sim. You can do much more with Trainz.

Cheers,

IS rail sim better than trainz 2009 or vice versa. your opinions will be greatly apprieciated.:D :Y:

Get Trainz Classics 3 (TC3) instead - assuming your interest is UK railways. If you are staying local (to NZ) ....... still get TC3! It will however involve a little more work but will be worth it (I am running Canadian and UK very nicely).

Three things are missing from the other product:
Artificial Intelligence - independent trains running, coupling/uncoupling
Physics - crude
Signals - many situations are not handled

The graphics are much better than Trainz in terms of vegetation.
And the vendor never communicates to their customers.

While TC3 is, in my opinion, the best Trainz so far, it does not have the built-in content that is required if you start to download non-TC3 specific content (which is the bulk of content on the DLS). To get non-TC3 content to work, you need to purchase 2006 so you can import the "legacy built-in" content that the downloaded content requires to function correctly.

Admittedly, some content is non-version specific and will work on any trainz version but routes especially will require the legacy built-in content so if you are just starting out new to trainz you will either have to purchase 2006 and TC3 or simply go directly to 2009.

Have Fun,

Bricey

Don't ignore TRS2004 in your evaluation. Many consider it to be the best version of Trainz yet:
Support for scenario creation and operation, as well as driver sessions.
Game engine works reliably.
Sound works reliably.
Asset management system works reliably.
Lots of good built-in content which works, including tutorials.
Compatible with a vast number of high quality third-party assets.
Can display trees properly.
Probably very inexpensive (five pounds in Britain).

Try as I might, I really can't recommend 2009 right now. It may have it's place in the sun someday, but right now it pales in comparison to other versions. While it's true the team are working on the second patch for WBE, I've rather lost confidence in Auran's repackaging scheme...

If you're looking to create your own routes, Train Sim's version of "Surveyor" is awful! I tried for an hour to connect two pieces of track together and make a spur with nothing but frustrations. It's awful.

While I have heard a lot of great things about TRS2004, I use TRS2006 because that's what I started with. Lots of people don't like 2006 though...

As for 2009, I have it, but haven't gotten too deep into it yet. Seems like it needs some more work.

All in all, I suppose it all boils down to whatever you're comfortable with.

Thanks for the help but i think i'll stick with tr09 for two reasons.1. SURVEYOR IS BETTER IN TRS009 THAN THAN IN RAIL SIM.2.I ALREADY ORDERED IT BY MAIL.:o

I has Rail Simulator - that's a "TS 2" for me, not more.

Rail Simulator has only one thing: the grafic ist better.

That's not all for me - the gameplay, the functions, your can many things more do in Trainz.

TS2009 have 3 things for me that I "must" buy it;)
-double framerate with
-higher draw distance with this faster fps
-it runs in Linux www.winehq.org search for Trainz.
TS2006 have Platinum Status and TS2009 silver status.

In Rail Simulator you can only drive 1 train and there is not much of trafic.
After some days I resell it.

I have just bought Railworks, the latest version of Railsim, mainly to see their version of the SDJR as I am building it in Ts2009. There is a lot I like about it, driving a loco being the best, and as someone else said the trees are excellent.
But route building is a steep learning curve, after three days getting almost nowhere I was glad to get back to Trainz!!! John.

TRS09, with all of its flaws, is much better than Failsim in my opinion. After being jerked around by the RS staff at their forum and told that I was "depressing the dev team" by saying that I was feeling left out by their lack of more US content and their focus on UK stuff almost exclusively, as well as getting yelled at for having problems with some of the things in RS, I have completely given up on ever trying to find anything really good with RS. Just stick with TRS.

Plus, it is published by EA, and you know what that means. If you install the game on your computer, you are guilty of piracy in their eyes, even if you bought it legaly.

The big difference between Railsimulator/Railworks and Trainz is the ability to create content.

I made a flatcar in a short period of time for Trainz and have yet to get one to work in RS/RW. If I can make content anyone can.

Trainz has TranDem for prototype terrain which works really great for Trainz, ReDem is sketchy and I never could get Tiles to work in RS/RW.

Trainz, any version, is better. It is fun, the interface in Trainz beats the MSTS/RS/RW "what is that switch/junction doing".

I like 2009 with it's warts. Its like that ugly person one marries because they are so much fun.

thanks for the help and one more question, how many locos does trs2009 bring it doesnt have to be exact just an estimate.thanks

LOCOS

Plenty. And, more where those came from... the DLS of course !
Lots of 3rd party online websites with freeware and payware locos... just google.:D

On the DLS alone, you have 9474 locomotives available for download, all for free. This is compared to the 6 for RS that you get for free.

i will jump in here. Yes, there are many locos you can download or you get with TS09,

BUT

you get only 1 in the new quality. Everything else could require you to run it in compatibility mode.

Yes, but there are many more non "faulty" assets on the DLS that you could run as well. Plus compatability mode seems to be the way to go anyway. I mean, you get trees in compatability mode, plus a bunch of locomotives that have nothing wrong with them in the first place.
