I got Trainz 2009 and carbon city on steam and the surveyor is greyed out in carbon city although i have registered both games and signed in on my auran account in game. what am i doing wrong that carbon cities surveyor wont work ?

This sounds like a case of installing Carbon City as a standalone program, rather than as an addon.

A crucial question - did you buy both TS2009 and Carbon City from the same place?

Also, you must be running at least SP2 (build 40040), although the recommended is SP3 or above (build 41844)

Yes i bought them both on steam , I bought carbon city before i bought 2009 and i assume that the steam version of the game is up to date.
I registered both games and then loged in with my account in carbon city and still no surveyor.
i reinstalled trainz 2009 and then i reinstalled carbon city.

Cabon City does not have surveyor functions unless you install it as an add-on to a full version of Trainz and add it's serial number to your Trainz install.

Add-ons don't usually have surveyor functions if installed on their own.

ok i went to options and then configer trainz and then where it says general.
it gives me the option to add the cd key and so i did , i added carbon citys cd to trainz 2009 and it says "you have not entered a valid CD key, please check that you are entering English charcters" and then i tryed adding trainz 2009 cd key to carbon city and i get the same message.

You may need to re-install the addon pack, then register the serial number.

Also, what's your build number? (bottom-right corner of Launcher screen)

Ok I checked and Trainz carbon city is registered already and you can only register a trainz product once it says.

Build 45856 for trainz 2009

and crabon city is Build 43361

I haven't heard of that build number - are you sure that's TS2009?

Also, make sure that you installed Cabon City as an addon.

it wont let me install it as an addon , that or do i have to go to the content manager thing ?
and if so what do i do ?

I do not know if this is of any help but my trains 2009 says its version 3.3 before its build number and so does carbon city yet trainz 2010 is appearing on my list , it wont let me play , it says i must purchase it but when i go to delete it , it says i cant because carbon city is dependent on some of its assets, and i forgot to mention on steam its called , trainz carbon city classic
yet when the main menu for carbon city classic loads it says trainz 2009 is the version of trainz it is associated with.
I own trainz 2009 on steam and it will let me play it because I own it.

I'm still not sure on the build numbers though - are you sure your build number is Build 45856? It's not one of the known TS2009 builds.

Also, build 43361 is known for patching issues.

Yes i am 100% on it , ok so if i had the latest service pack (i am assuming i do since its steam and everything is kept up to date) what is the next step for trying to add crabon city to 2009 ?

The standard proceedure is:

1.Install as addon.
2.Register Serial number in TS2009/10/12.
3.Turn off favourites feature.

Also note that Trainz should be run as administrator.

where is the option that usually says " you can install it as an add on" ?
I have registered its serial number.
and where is the favorites feature ?

I am really thankful for all the help so far by the way.
i dont think steam will let me run it as administrator , i am on windows XP

Usually, this will appear when installing addon packs.

Sometimes though it will not appear if the build number is not high enough.

It may be possible to copy the .ja file from the folder it installed into into the TS2009/Builtin folder.

Which folder is the .ja file in ?

ok i searched my steam games folder and classic carbon city is not in it, but trainz 2009 , 2010 and trainz classics volume 1 and 2 are in it.
im guessing its in the trainz 2009 or 2010 folder. but i don't know which folder the .ja file could be in , in either of these games.

It will be in the folder that you installed the addon pack to.

When I installed carbon city, it did not give me an option to install it to trainz 2009 as an addon , It installed as an indapendant game. yet it doesn't show up in the steam games folder. and since I can't find it there, it may be in the trainz 2009 folder but i have no idea which folder it may be in, if it is in the Trainz 2009 folder.

OK - as said before, it will be in the addon pack folder.

Look in your Steam folder for a steamapps folder, then inside there, look for your addon pack.

The relevant .ja file will be in there.

Another thing you can try is doing a database repair in Content Manager.

This is one of the reasons why I avoid Trainz versions on Steam.

I already have checked steam apps and there is no folder for it unfortunately. there is a .gcf file for it though but there is one of them files for every game and it cannot be opened by any programs i own. but its called "classic carbon city content folder.gcf". and classic carbon city is not sold as dlc by the way, its sold as stand alone.so maybe thats why i cannot install it to trainz 2009.
and i will try a database repair in content manager. in trainz 2009 but i cannot access the content manager in classic carbon city and only the content manager for trainz 2009.

See how you get on there - in the meantime, I will see if I can find out more info.

Shane

P.S. Game data in Steam apps is in <steam install folder>/steamapps/common/<app name>
