TRAIN DERAILMENT!

I believe the statistic is that a train hits a car or a person every 90 minutes.

I recently uncovered an official FRA accident report circa 1975 for Bucks County that says a Reading passenger train traveling 60 mph struck a semi at a crossing after the truck did not stop for the flashing gates. 3 people were killed, 1 was injured. Here's what I don't understand: it says two people that were killed were employees and the other one was a passenger on the train. The injured person was another employee and the truck driver escaped unscathed! Does this mean the train derailed when it hit the truck? Strangely enough, I can't uncover any more information about this accident. I've tried searching Google for records of it; nothing turns up. Does anyone know anymore information about this accident? I'm just curious because I think it's strange something like this would not turn up.

P.S. This accident is not to be mixed up with the fiery collision of a semi with a SEPTA RDC in Southampton, PA in 1982.

EDIT: After doing some more intense research, I've discovered enough information about the accident to fulfill my quest. I've found out there was no derailment in this collision, so my post should really be deleted. Sorry guys!

Do you have a link to that? I know all the crossings on that line very well.

Anyone knows the real cause of the accidents? Maybe share some photos to aid the ongoing investigation. Just heard in the news from Philippines, more or less 50 Iranian medical doctors and students were killed from same accident too. It has been said the the bodies are now moving back to Iran.

Here's the link to the document from where most of the information is located.

http://www.nrc.gov/materials/transportation/certification/package-study/rwma92.pdf

Look towards the bottom of page 84 (page 43 in the actual document) and you'll find the official NTSB description of the accident; it explains the accident in its entirety.

Thanks for the info, I am quite familiar with the Stony Hill Road crossing, but never knew about that accident. Very tragic.

The link seems not working for me here. Anyway, I feel for the victims of the tragic downfall. I'm not really familiar with the actual trains, but I do relate with the situation. Hope to drastically reduce the accident rate and radically work on accident prone area.

Truck carrying locomotive overturns

The eastound lanes of U.S. Route 322 were closed for several hours after a tractor-trailer hauling a locomotive engine overturned at about 11 p.m. Sunday near the double bridges between the Reedsville and Burnham exits.
When the tractor-trailer flipped on its side, the engine broke loose from the trailer, and went over an embankment, Mifflin County Regional Police reported. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Jose Garcia, 57, of Erie suffered minor injuries and was transported to Lewistown Hospital, police said. Police said he will be charged with driving at an unsafe speed.
Due to hazmat cleanup, the eastbound lanes were closed for several hours.
Police were assisted at the scene by Milroy EMS, Reedsville Fire and Rescue, Derry Township Fire Police, Eagle Towing and Recovery and Mifflin County Emergency Management Agency.

please don't tell me that engine belonged to some museum...oh god...PLEASE tell me it wasn't a steam engine!!!!!

Sorry, but there's a story i heard at the local model railroad shop (which i can't prove, mind you) of a steam engine being moved that hit an overpass and nearly lost its smokestack. probably happened at the 50's, from what they told me (as usual i didn't ask much). supposedly they hacked the stack off a sister that was being cut up and put it on the damaged engine.

that's not funny...AT ALL. :n:

Pardon me but the 1361 is the most beautiful 4-6-2 we have left, and if i ever saw her injured...oh there'd be trouble. let's just say the guy who caused her all that pain would be running from the 3985.

WRONG SIR!!!

The most beautiful is the Southern PS-4 left in the Smithsonian.
I'm just picking Sawyer, the 1361 is a beautiful 4-6-2, and the ps4 was just my opinon.

Rock On!

oh, i don't forget her. Actually, i just feel like she deserves more than to be stuffed and mounted in the Smithsonian's basement. She is beautiful, i just don't like the feedwater heater. it bugs me for some reason. If they could lose that, i'd like them better.

I hope the guys at New Orleans Public Belt saw this..........
After dropping $250,000 in the first quarter of 2007 due to derailments, swipes, and other stupid mistakes that were PREVENTABLE.......... :o

Anyway, I'm glad the crew survived this one.....

Well they most likely did. It is a good road. I live by it. Please don't call it stupid.

Eh, forgive an old steam junkie like myself, but what is so special about these two locomotives?

Plenty of SD-40-2's and lots of SD70M-2s left in the world
I agree with you completly, Klinger, but still a collision is nothing good.

Derailment on Rockville bridge: http://trainwatcher.weebly.com/ns-pittsburgh-line.html
High winds topple double stacks, tipping them over ... containers floating down river.
Local news reports: Search and rescue are in place, for ever so slight chance that persons (illegals) "might" (most probably not) "could" be inside the partialy submerged containers. Emergency responce cold water rescue team deployed, for search of Chinese shipment of 2 containers to "Five Below" store in action. God save the Chinese Bird Clocks and Nike sneakers!

If emergency responce teams open container doors to search, Three Mile Island Nuclear Power plant, and Peach Bottom Electrical Generation Station, water intakes may become fouled with Nike Sneaker shoelaces.

Amtrak 43 is hours late, time to fire up the Amtrak bus HBG to PGH

This doesn't ansewer which locomotive this was though... If the driver was from Erie, this could be in Pennsylvania, but man, I just absolutely personally HATE IT when rail goes by road, especially in America. Surely the increased clearances can take such a beautiful work of art? Many US highways followed the railroad for goodness sakes! Road goes by Rail, period.

On the Rockville Bridge, near Harrisburg Pa, in December there was a severe windstorm, that derailed and toppled several double stack cars over, and two containers floated down river.

As we had severe high winds agian yesterday ... NS placed a loaded merchndise train on the upwind track of the 3 track bridge ... which acted to some degree as a windbreaker to passing double stack trains.
