TRAIN DERAILMENT!

You call that damaged. Engine 54 was nailed by a log truck, and had its entire cab ripped off, and still it was put back into service. Also, I doubt anything will happen to the Hydrochloric Acid car.

If your talking about that BAR wreck, back then railroads had more repair facilities and since all work was done in house, it was often easier to repair than to replace. These days that has changed and unless the unit is third gen it will likely get scrapped.

As would be advertised, the famous 701 WILL be scrapped. :'( :'( Oh well, I wanted the horn, but Ron H. is getting it. :( Gotta love that RS3L!:) Sounds perfect.

Additionally, the RR is on to a slow order, back in service and repairing the track while trains crawl at 10m/h

Of course they are scrapping the 40.
One, it is heavily damaged and two, its a 40. They are old, so why not just replace it with a new one.
I'm a huge fan of 40-2's but in this case, thus would be better.

Deailments

I hope the guys at New Orleans Public Belt saw this..........
After dropping $250,000 in the first quarter of 2007 due to derailments, swipes, and other stupid mistakes that were PREVENTABLE.......... :o

Anyway, I'm glad the crew survived this one.....

Woo.. The RailAmerica SD70 is damaged What ever shall we do?!
Seriously? That locomotive is the UGLIEST thing that has ever touched FEC rails. I railfanned FEC when I was in Florida on Vacation last year. They were doing fine, and that new scheme on the 1st 4 SD70s looked handsome, until RA, Like our other favorite communist shortline mega owner, G&W, Comes in, and puts the ugliest paintschemes on some nice locomotives. Too bad the 40-2 is getting the torch. It's fixable, but in Today's economy, who cares. Just run right out and buy a new one!
Oh, About that UP SD70ACe, Whoop Dee Doo. They probably have another 3,000 on order as we speak.. knowing UP.

That's stunning if that derailment was caused by the sun's heat bending the rails! Glad that no one died, though.

It is amazing, too, what the railroads will rebuild in order to save the hassle of buying another loco. Just look at this page (about 2/3 down) and you can see what I mean. It looks if the GP60M is a total loss (last pic), but it was rebuilt and repainted and put back into service. I can't even tell that it's the same locomotive!

Just putting it out there

Kyle

Update:

FEC104 has been back on rails as of June 7th. Sorry I couldn't get this quicker.
However, presently it is getting final repairs as of lately so it should be back on rails. At least some of RailAmerica's "communism" disappeared, the RailAmerica graphic on the long hood is gone, replaced with Florida East Coast, and the tail end of the engine got the FEC hurricane logo, not the nose. My friend Tim S. of Tamarac, FL got video of the train he was on from the 13th, train 206, a Miami to Jax train.

Temporary shoo flys are long gone. The temporary jointed wooden rail is now welded concrete rail again.

Because of this and other precautions, through trains are restricted to 50mph between 1 and 7 PM.

Bridge fire and fatality
The bridge is 265 feet long, open deck, four pile bent, all steel except for the deck. The deck was constructed of a composite (plastic) material. The bridge has 16 bents including the dump bents. NS crew consisting of an NS EIC and three contractors started work on Monday, January 11, 2010, installing and repairing horizontal braces (see photos). These braces are welded from stinger to stringer at a 45 degree angle for support. There was no slow order required. They finished work on Tuesday, January 12th about 3pm central time. A northbound train passed over the bridge about 630 pm and did not see any problems. The next train was the empty coal train. The lead engine stopped 46 feet short of the north end of the bridge after initiating an emergency application. All three engines and one coal car (see photos) stopped on the blazing bridge. Aparently the welding left some of the plastic deck ties smoldering and the first northbound train fanned the fire into a raging inferno. The second train then saw the blaze, initiated the emergency application, and the occupied engine came to a stop on the blazing bridge.

A CSX wreck also occurred at 0230am Feb7th, and was a runaway. Total count, 113 of 130 cars on the ground. Right over Bridge 24 in Glencoe near Roddy Sag between road 754 and Tooland Road. Cars all over, including in Willis Creek. Two feet of snow on top of the wreck.
Crew was uninjured, and cut the engines away on the fly reportedly as the derailment was occurring behind them. That's unconfirmed, but what's coming from CSX's initial reports
Shot of the incident from the paper...

Eh, forgive an old steam junkie like myself, but what is so special about these two locomotives?

Plenty of SD-40-2's and lots of SD70M-2s left in the world

I couldn't agee more.

If it was an F, E, PA/PA1, sharknose or any other 30's to 60's loco, i'd be sad. There are lots and lots of these new locos.
