Touchscreen Monitors

Hi Everybody.
Since having a galaxy tab I have become a great fan of touchscreen technology. I am now thinking of buying a touchscreen monitor for my PC.

I was wondering if there is anyone on the forum that has used a touchscreen monitor outside of iPad or android in Trainz. Would there be any benefit when using surveyor, settings or when just driving a consist.

I would imagine it would be great if you touch the actual cab controls on a locomotive to make them move and change the performance of the engine.

So, has anyone had any experience, as their advice would be most appreciated. Buying the monitor would in the main be for other uses on the PC, but having it enhance Trainz and my other simulators would certainly give it a much bigger "joy factor" reason for buying.

With thanks in advance for any replies.

A touch Pad in your hand or lap is OK but as a monitor not so much, try puting your galaxy tab up where the monitor would be and try using it.

When you get a touch screen monitor watch out for the flies!

Rob.

Another classic there Rob, I do not know where you find them. :D

However, this is Somerset. We do not have flies in Somerset. They would not dare come down here, there are no chav's for them to pitch on and everybody carries around at least six cans of fly spray on their person throughout the summer period.

The only place you will see the odd fly is on the very numerous Cow pats dotted around the fields here. Even then the cows chase them away.

So, there are definitely no flies in Somerset unless they are brought in by the tourist:(

Seeing as I cannot get any answers to my touch screen monitor question, I am going to post on UKTS where I may get a sensible answer:udrool:

If you don't have flies in Somerset why carry 6 cans of fly spray - are they used to make the locals smell nicer?

Hi Robd And Everybody
If you don't have flies in Somerset why carry 6 cans of fly spray - are they used to make the locals smell nicer?

robd the reason that the people of Somerset carry large numbers of fly spray cans around with them in summer is because of the mosquitoes ( not flies they are different)

The mosquitoes originate from the large numbers of Rhiens (very slow running watercourses) throughout the county that stop most of us from being submerged by the Bristol Channel.

They are a great asset to us particularly in the 16th century when the Rheins with very little support from the human population defeated the Duke of Monmouth rebellion. The Duke or any of his army had never seen a Rhein until marching through Somerset in the dark to attack the king's army he fell into one followed by most of his infantry.

The commotion awoke the king's army who then slaughtered the Dukes forces and secured the position of our great monarchy until the present day.

Anyway, after that potted history of the only significant thing to have happened throughout history here in this part of Somerset, I still do not have any replies to my touchscreen monitor enquiry.

With regard to the positioning of the monitor which someone advised about, the latest generation of flatscreen monitors do not carry the dangers of various types of radiation that they did only a couple of years ago. The above means that it is now safe to position a monitor much closer to the viewer without the risk of eye damage that has so long been linked with monitors.

The foregoing has brought touchscreen monitors into large offices for business use providing there planned positioning enables the operator to carry out other work in the vicinity of the monitor. The most used layout is to have a desk curved around the operator with the monitor on the apex of the curve allowing the user to swivel the desk chair to face the desk either side of the monitor

The above is the layout I have in the office I am in now and therefore I do not see positioning as a problem. However, I would still like anyone who have used a touchscreen monitor with Trainz to advise on the benefits or otherwise of touchscreen in our hobby if there is anyone with that knowledge out there.

NB:-Robd, please do not start anymore riots in London as I have to go up there for a couple of days next week:D

Touch Screen monitors, nice thought.
Plus you need to be very careful. Picture it, your cruising nicely along with your half mile freight train at a good steady speed, you put your hands down from the screen for a moment as you are just entering a small bend, OMG There is an AI train dead ahead, as quick as you can you grab for the brakes on the screen with your hands and go right through the thin glass. oops.

HAHA, Very funny. That said, I did for the first time see a 3-D television at the weekend and sat there watching with the glasses on. I have to say it was a fantastic experience and made me think what Trainz would be in 3-D if you place the camera on the line and have Castle class steam locomotive or such like charging toward you.

What an experience that would be

vista and windows 7 (I think)

I don't think Win7 Home premium would support touch screen, one would need to upgrade to the hellishly more expensive pro or ultimate version. I think the same might apply with Vista.

I have got Windows 7 Pro version on this PC as it is the one I use when working from home. However, I do believe the lower versions can handle touchscreen as standard from what little I have read although I could be wrong (it has been known)

I believe about 15 years ago was the last time.:hehe:

perhaps one of the more technical minded members can advise us, is there anyone out there.

15 years ago for what? - Your last spray down with a fly spray?

I don't know enough about OS's to say what's required for touch screen monitors but whatever it is, it's probably not worth the expense.

Oh come on Rob, not worth the expense, where's your sense of adventure. Can you imagine in surveyor when the spline or track will not lay where you want it to go. You could take all the frustration out on the monitor poking it with your finger until the monitor fell over backwards.

That would certainly get rid of the " I want to scream sensation" we all sometimes feel with Trainz:D

I've recently bought a AOC Touchmate e2239Fwt. It cost £165 which as a special offer I thought was very good.
Runs very well with Win7.
Trouble is you find yourself trying to tap your laptop screen every now and again!
I bought it because it is LED backlit and images look great!
