How does HDR come into this by the way? It's supposed to have 10 bit encoding instead of 8 bit and works with Ultra HD BlU Ray. I might dig into HDR and see how it affects computer monitors.

An Nvidia Quadro or AMD Firepro GPU is required for 10bit colour. It's a detail provided for colour sensitive work and is a feature set left out of consumer cards.

My understanding is AMD's new cards will support HDR and I suspect nVidia's will shortly.

Yes - the GTX 1080 supports HDR and 10 bit HEVC encode/ 10/12 bit decode.
