Advice on new laptop

Steam Rules OK
I've been using an Asus Rog laptop, with an i7 processor and GTX1070 video card, for Trainz for the last 10 years at least and I am now at the point of replacing it and I need some advice on what to look for.
I am definitely sticking with ASUS as this laptop has been a good and trusted friend
I'm looking at the 4000 series Nvidia cards but do I need to go for the 4090 or will 4070 or 4080 be good enough.
For the processor I am looking at the intel i9 or is an AMD better.
And finally 16 or 32 GB of RAM

Thanks for any help in the above as you could be saving me a lot of money.

Your problem is going to be the display. ASUS and Dell load their RTX4060 and up with displays that are above 1920 x 1080 that Trainz uses. A 4K oled screen might look great but you're paying for something you won't use.

GPU wise your current score is 10,465.

Basically an RTX 4060, RTX 3070 and an RTX 4070 mobile versions are about the same on the 3D score or close enough that you won't notice the difference. The slowest is the RTX 4060.

Dell https://www.dell.com/en-ie have an outlet store that might be worth looking at. Alienware have a very good reputation. Prices around 1,300 euros.

ASUS I think you're looking at 3,000 euros.

If you have room I'd go Dell refurbished tower workstation. You can upgrade the video card at a later date. Currently they have a w series xeon with an RTX A4500 video card scores 21,925 on the 3 D score. It comes with 64 gigs of memory, 24 Tb of hard disk and a 512 gig MLC SSD to boot from. You will need a monitor but Dell's are reasonable.

Thanks for the input John.
But I think I will stick with Asus as I have been really pleased with the Laptop I have at the moment. And my preference is a laptop and not a tower as I take it with me everywhere I go.
So from what you say I need to go to a 4080 to see improvement.

Your current machine has a 3d score of 10,000 the RTX 4060, RTX 3070, and RTX 4070 all have about the same score of about 18,000 which is twice that of your current system. I think you'd see a difference.

https://uk.store.asus.com/rog-zephyrus-m16-2022-7450-20368.html a 2022 model but still a very capable machine, is a couple of thousand. The RTX 3070 TI is quite a nice GPU. Benchmark score is 20,170. A 4080 is around 26,000, and a 4090 is around 28,000 not that much higher and you'll only notice the difference on some layouts.

So take your pick on the ASUS ROG line up. Note I think the 2023 models offer about the same performance or better than the 2024 models, and the ROG intelligent cooling is very nice. You are looking at 3 to 4 k price wise though.
