Tired of waiting for a SD90MAC?

Looks like an ACe with that nose

They are really easy to mistake for one from the front. Seen a couple of them before.... You have to look at the back, on the SD90's, it is not rounded where it is one the ACe. Plus, the SD90MAC is longer than the ACe.... (Wouldn't notice from the front).

And there's that hollow spot on the conductors side under the raised portion of the the running boards, like on the 80MAC

Yep, that is also a phase two. All the phase 2 H's had those cabs. SD90MAC-H2's were cool units, wish someone would make them.

Don't forget that the area around the exhaust stack on the SD90MAC is flat, while on the SD70ACe and SD70M-2 is beveled. That's the only definite way to determine if it's a SD90MAC or SD70ACe/SD70M-2.

Erm no, there's quite a few ways to definitely spot the difference.

I think the SD90 is LONGER, right?

6ft longer, but that's not too terribly noticeable for something that is 80ft long at that angle.

There are a lot more difference between them besides an exhaust stack. The SD90s have far more in common with an SD80 than they do an SD70.

In addition to all of the differences listed, you have the extra brace holding up the fuel tank (the shear weight of it couldn't be held up the standard way, so they were added), from overhead views, the SD70ACe has a single, beveled exhaust stack, the SD90MAC-H2 has two flat exhaust stacks (one per turbocharger), the ACe has two rad fans, the 90MAC has 3, and they sound significantly different, the SD90MAC-H sounds like this and the SD70ACe sounds like this. Just a handful, I could go further.

some of the UP 90's have the beveled engine compartment. seen them run the La Grande route.

The 90's with the beveled engine compartments have the true 6,000 hp 16-265H prime movers. The 90's with the square engine compartments have the 4,300 hp 16-710 prime movers.

Those 4,300HP units are labeled as SD9043MAC's. Like with the GE AC6000's, there was an option to rate those engines to 6000 HP, but since they too had a motherload of issues, the good ones never got upgraded............

Correction: EMD did not make any model designation for a SD90MAC equipped with a 4,300hp 710 or a 6,000hp 265H; Union Pacific came up with the model designation SD9043MAC, not EMD.
