Thinking about purchasing Trainz 2009

Okay my Trainz 2006 is pretty much obsolete now! I cannot access the DLS and I have tried everything, so I am considering spending the $20 bucks to download it. I have some questions first though.

1) Work kind of problems exist in TRS 2009 and it inherit a lot of TRS 2006's issues?

2) Will some of the content I have that worked in TRS 2006 work in TRS 2009 such as Sporbust's locomotives, World of Trainz Paywares and JointRails stuff and what kind of built in content is available in TRS 2009?

3) I purchased a FCT thinking I was gonna be able to access DLS TRS 2006, but I was died wrong. Will I be able to use THAT ticket for DLS access in TRS 2009 instead?

Buy a 1 year FCT It works in TRS2006 surefire ... you have to "Activate Ticket"... and TS10 Boxed version ... I doodid' both.

I will always create in TRS2006, and test my route in TS10.

Actually Auran/N3V *might* have phased out support based on the recent newsletter, or may be giving people a head's up that that may happen soon. You'd have to play this one by ear.

09 should be officially supported til 2014 but unless you buy on Steam (always a bad idea!) one can buy 2010 for close to the same price.

Why not go for Trainz 12 or RW3 instead? These versions are more up to date and longer supported. Also most of the route developing (at least in Russia) are designed to work in Trainz 2012...

FCT tickets work for all versions of Trainz that support the Content Manager program (So basically Trainz 2006 and up) so yes, your FCT ticket will still be valid.

To the best of my knowledge, Trainz 2009 runs "fine", as well as you'd expect any game to run. However, I would personally advise you to actually go for either Trainz 2010 or Trainz 12, as they both are much better versions of the Trainz simulator series. Remember that if you buy both Trainz 12 and/or Trainz 2010 along with Trainz 2009, you can drag over the stuff from Trainz 2009 into the new version with ease so that you get the Trainz 2009 content in a better version of the game. :)

Some content that is 04, 06 works in 09, 10.

Once you go beyond SP 44088 in TS10 (or one higher SP) you lose compatability mode.

TS12 is a bit more picky, an requires that you fix every asset, or it won't play them at all ... Quite allot of assets will not work in TS12 at all, unless you are a super Mr Fix-It, Rokit' Sientist'. TS12 is non-compatable mode with zillions of 04, 06, 09, 12 assets.

TS 10 should be choice #2, TS12 being choice #1 of an upgrade from TRS2006.

But be prepared for Texture Black Holes, surveyor routes comming up missing, and assets that will not run, especially on TS12.

This is why I create routes in TRS2006, and import them into TS10. Alot less to go wrong.

Also TRS2006 runs on my GF Integrated Graphics laptop with 7-20 FPS ... TS10 barely runs and gets @ 0.02 FPS.

Some profess that TS12 has better framerates on medium end PC's, but will not run on low end PC's at all.

If you upgrade to 09, 10, 12 you will need a fast processer, and a good video card.

You can stick with TRS2006 and be very happy and download without a FCT, or with a FCT.

It depends. Virtually all can be MADE to work, but error-checking was much less stringent in the older versions. There has been a large-scale, Auran-sanctioned project called the DLS Cleanup that is designed to fix older content to work in the newer Trainz. Really, the majority of these errors are simple fixes - most are just misspellings of key tags in assets' configuration files. The good news is that there are relatively few broken items compared to, say, this time last year. The bad news is, there's always a chance you could download an asset that hasn't been updated yet, especially if it's from a third-party site, over which the DLS Cleanup has no jurisdiction. But, even if I didn't know how to fix stuff, it wouldn't be a deal-breaker if I were in your shoes.

If I have the right version of Trainz 12, they do work on low end pc. My computer have Nvidia Gerforce 310M graphics card on my (budget) laptop and it works fine, except for some stutter on Balezino-Mosti route.

I run TS2010 with Multiplayer, so I have no Compatibility Mode, like a TS12 user. I've been a member since 2009, and in that time, have learned to fix almost anything! I have shared some of my knowledge in a video series. It currently has 2 episodes, and and 3rd will be made shortly, as I have found a new microphone. The 3rd episode will be how to fix Mrtrain's GS-4, and the Daylight consist on the DLS.

Fixing Common Trainz Errors Episode 1
Fixing Common Trainz Errors Episode 2

I hope if you do decide to 'upgrade', that these will come in handy.

Kieran.

Also, on a semi-related note, I can also assist with TS2009 and later version issues (especially patching, the black/multicolour texture issue, and a few other things) via my tutorial website.

Personally I wouldn't purchase 2009. I have it, but it's in a strange place between 2006 and 12. I would look at 2010, were I you.

What finally swayed me to buy TS10 was a Discount Voucher, and I was curious, wanted better graphics than TRS2006. I also wanted to test my route in TS10, and operate all the 09, 10 locos, that won't run in 06 (unless you apply advanced Rokit' Sience').

Had TS12 had a slightly lower price I might have jumped directly to TS12.

I would advise you to get 2010 and stay at build 44088. I have a copy of 2010 updated that will run in MP and I also have TS12, But 2010/44088 is my main version of Trainz that I use.

I do not have 2010 or 12. I only have trainz 2006, classics, and 2009. I'd go with trainz 2009 and patch it to service pack 3. Most routes run fair or decent on my laptop that has integrated graphics. I can't really say anything about 10 or 12 since I never had it.

At this point in time ... What would be the advantage of buying TS09 (over buying TS10)?

As TS10 is available, and TS10 is essentially a tried and tested, improved version of the rushed out release of inferior TS09.

TS09 and TS10 came out @ 6 months apart ... buying TS09, would be like buying a beta test version of TS10.

It would be akin to buying XP (TS09) ... over Vista (TS10) ... when Windows7 is current (TS12)

(not to be confusing, as XP isn't necessarily for TS09 ... and Vista isn't necessarily for TS10 ... and Windows 7 isn't necessarily for TS12).

Your real choice should be with choosing between TS10 & TS12. With a discount voucher ... it will make the choice easy to differentiate.

TRS2006 still funtions well in all aspects (including downloading). I will always love TRS2006

I have to agree with others here trainz 2010 would be better buy. Its just like 2009 but better and I have heard on the forms more from what I seen issues with 2009 than 2010 in general.
