thinking about buying Trainz 2010 but some questions first.

I've been thinking on and off about buying Trainz 2010.

Before I buy it I need to know something

1) The one big issue with these games is that I read a lot about older tracks and objects not working in future games. This is what keeping me from buying this game. Suppose I build a large layout and new game comes out 2011, 2012 etc. How do I know if they will still work in the future?

2) I'm more of a fan of High Speed Train than regular trains. Does Trainz 2010 have any High Speed Train and route that work in 2010? I saw on Youtube of ICE train running on pro train perfect. Wiki says its Trainz 2006 version for Germany. I'm jealous of that :udrool: . I don't want to be limited to boring trains of USA (no offends) but that's me. I want futuristic trains! /rant
(tho i don't mind playing with regular trains)

can't think of any other questions atm.

To the best of my knowledge...
Route made for 2010EE will work with at least the new few addition. 'Compatibility' mode has been taken out of the newest 2010EE Build (Multiplayer 45467 and above) and most pre 2009 items may have problems. Object are being built / fixed to work in 2010EE

no idea about high speed (there are TGV built in.) I'm mostly content creation not routes.

Others may have more insite..

Hi bossyman15, and welcome to Trainz.

First, to my knowledge "multiplayer" is still in Beta version and is only an additional version (if wanted) for 2010. Apart from that I know very little about it but for me personally I am not going to install it.

To try and answer your first question, yes there are a lot of items/content that were built for previous of Trainz and have problems with the current supported versions. No doubt this will be the case in the future as computers (in general) advance. However you may notice that at the moment many people are involved in trying to correct these (previously working items) to the current standards. So any layout you create will still work but may require some users to correct content. I would not worry about this problem as unfortunately us users of Trainz are not able to keep up with changes but for the most part the content we use will.

For High Speed Trains I have no idea, but you are not limited to trains from one particular country. There may be different versions of Trainz for different countries but you are still able to obtain various content/creations to your particular needs. Many of the regulars here only buy from Auran Direct for different reason and as I understand it, Auran are trying to reduce the amount of "International" versions. Every time they need to fix problems with a patch, they have to create 4-10 (whatever) patches for the different countries. If they can reduce this then they save a lot of time and of course money.

From your first post, I do not think you will be disappointed with Trainz (2010), it will be a Hobby that stays with you for a very long time. The learning curve is not the easiest, but there is a lot of help here. This forum is one of the best I have ever seen for help.

Craig
:):):)

BTW If you decide to purchase Trainz, say good-bye to your family, friends, work, any other social life. Trainz will take over :hehe:

P.S. You do not need to install the Multiplayer version, that is up to you. If you do not install it you will still have Compatibility mode.

TS2010 has the UK ECML route from York to London included, the built-in session for that has you driving a Class 43 HST (125mph).

Compatibility Mode is being removed as it was only a temporary feature until the TRS content was bought up to date, this process is now in progress with the DLS Clean Up. TC/TS2009 and TS2010 have bought a lot of new features to the game that make the new content a lot better but it does require that these new items are created to those standards, the majority of the old content will work with a few little fixes but with everything moving forward is the future ;)

Nothing wrong with TS2010 ,you can save your service pack to the build number 44088 then you can keep your Compatibility Mode ,if you wish to a future patch or service pack higher you may not retain your Compatibility Mode ,but there is nothing wrong with Ts 2010 and of cause there may be a 2011,2012 who cares ill buy them as well ,,,why because every new version that come out brings something new to the game, 99% of the time if the game doesn't run right then it is normally your hardware in the computer,
so dont waste your time go and buy it asap ,but buy it from Auran only

CJ187 just released a (another?) very nice ICE3 set model (that is error-free in TS09/10) just 5 days ago.

Before that on the 16th Jan, josiassobrinho released a very well done model of the TGV V150 set that broke the speed record.

And of course nexusdj updated his/spanner/jivebunny's pendolino (class 390) set a while ago too.

TS2010 came with an updated model of the class 43 HST of course.

These join the many models of other TGV, ICE, AVE, Acela and Shinkansens that are already on the DLS - although some will need a little work to get running in 2010 until the DLS cleanup is more progressed.

Basically, while there is a definite 1970s/1980s bias to a lot of what people make, there is still plenty of (modern) high-speed rail on the DLS and available for trainz.

I see you first registered in the forum 23 months ago. That's a long time to be thinking on and off about buying Trainz 2010. (or in fact, any version of Trainz). Why don't you just take a punt like the rest of us and buy TS2010 ???

IMHO, 95%+ that have taken the punt are really pleased they did...

Cheers, Mac...

My experience was similar, not working I don't have much money to buy games, and had been on the fence about trainz for a long time (I almost bought the original trainz, but in the end decided I'd stick with MSTS), I originally registered for the forum with the blind hope that I'd be able to at least see the contents of the DLS to see just what locomotives were available. Of course, I couldn't, so I forgot about trainz for a year or so until my interest was sparked by something else - a video I believe - and I decided to take the plunge.

No real point to this rambling, just pointing out that he's not the only one that registered quite a while before actually buying.

Yeah I was just about the same boat as you. But ok I think I will buy it.

I see that Steam have it too.

or do I just buy it from Auran store?

It would be best to buy it from the Auran store as Steam have their own patch system and are currently not patched to SP3+Hotfix. Plus, buying direct means all the money goes to Auran.

Personally I would not buy from Steam - their versions can be out of date and they also install some sort of DRM (anti piracy) software or require you to have the disc in the drive while running. The same can be said of many other third party vendors.

The Auran version might cost a little more but it can save a lot of hassle.

I agree, stay away from Steam. If for some reason they no longer support the program, you're stuck because their versions "phone" home. Also you can't install any upgrades, or add-ons it seems, into their version of the program. It's like one-pony show.

If you are looking for a cost savings look at Amazon.com.

But I can say that ordering directly from Auran is not as costly as you think because you'll get better service and the full cost goes back to the company to help support the company. If you buy through a third-party, most of your expense goes into the deep pockets of the publisher with only a few pennies going back to Auran.

Regarding the errors with TS2010 Native mode. They're not as frequent as they used to be. If you download anything from the DLS, look for items with a blue-dot on them. These are error free and 100% 2009/2010 compatibile.

If anything does need to be fixed, the process is really easy, and we can help you.

I just made the purchase after hmm-ing and haw-ing about it for a while, but I'm glad I did -- I haven't even tried to operate in compatibility mode and there is more than enough content to muck around with that the good folks around here have made work for TS2010 natively.

At the rate I'm going, I figure by the time I really figure out what I'm doing these guys won't have left anything behind to even -want- to try compatibility mode.

Does this mean that I would still be able to Play the game if Auran ever went out of business? I recall seeing on earlier posts that you always needed an internet connection in order to play. I had always been curious.I would be dissapointed if I discovered that I could no longer even play if Auran went out of business. :o

While it is up to YOU if you buy it and from where & when you buy TS2010, but shop around such retail outlets that sell computer games, as quite often they can be a lot cheaper than buying direct (for example: 45 - 50% cheaper than N3V Games direct price). Besides, if you buy from a retail store, and not say download it, you may have less problems if their is a fault with the game.

Blue dot in TS2010 CM (JCitron's post)

This would be helpful but what columns do you have to view in CM to see the blue dot so you know if it's compatible with TS 2009/2010? I have build 42203 of TS 2010 (CM 3.2)

Yes, you will still be able to play any version of Trainz if N3V ever go "belly up" !!!. You don't need an internet connection to play any version of Trainz (except Multi-player of course).
If N3V went broke, then the Trainz community would probably loose the DLS and the forum. There are lots of 3rd party sites that host Trainz content. Some even have there own Train forums.
Hope this helps.

Be a where that if you buy TS2010 from "Steam", (or Just Trains) you can't apply SP3 to take it to build 44088. (there's no patch/service pack available for "Steams" build number that they are currently selling)... Besides "Steams" current price is $44.99 USD & N3V's Retail "Boxed version" of TS2010 is only $39.99 Aussie dollars... - http://www.auran.com/auran/store/index.php?p=3&PID=198

Schweitzerdude; here's the link if you want to install TS2010 SP3; http://download.ts2009.com/patch/42203_to_44088.exe

Cheers, Mac...
