The ONE day i go to Georgetown...

MKT Forever and always
...and they have to be running the blasted diesel:hehe:

But seriously, I've been on a Colorado Train Vacation this past week, and as part of it, i managed to revisit an old friend, the Georgetown Loop RR. I was there around 2000, back when 12 and 14 powered the trains, 40 was in Alaska, and 44 was in the shop for an overhaul to operation. I must say a lot has changed. Back then, i distinctly remember being able to see the train all the way down from Devil's gate to the lower turn (just above Devil's gate station) and the gift shop/depot wasn't there. I (or more correctly, my dad) bought our tickets in the old Georgetown Depot.

Granted, the line has changed operators, and a lot has changed. One major one was, it was sunny the last time i was there:hehe: :o. It poured on us off and on the whole way. they even had to stop the train and evacuate the open cars.

One thing that had me confused (and a little peeved) was the fact that, unbeknownst to me, twice a month, the Pineapple Princess goes down twice a month for mantainence and repairs. They had been using the 1203, an end-cab switcher that looks suspiciously like the GE-50 tonner used on the SP Laws-Keeler branch (probably of the same design) but on the train before ours (the 1:35) she had a failure of some sort, and little 21, a tiny 44 ton B+B switcher, had to save the day. I was quick to condemn her as unsuitable for Colorado railroad operations, but she proved me wrong. in the rain, on wet rail, and dragging 5 heavily loaded cars behind her, she dug in and got us up the hill without nary a slip of a wheel. then she doubly impressed me, holding firm to the rail as she descended the steep grades in the pouring rain. To me, she's earned her place there, she's "Baby Dreadnought" to me now.

one thing i've learned from this trip is, despite not having been back for years, Colorado never leaves you, especially her railroads. it gets in your blood. The other railroads here i've visited, the Rio Grande Scenic (a trip i highly recommend, but get the Mile by Mile guide first), the Cripple Creek & Victor, the Leadville, Colorado & Southern (another highly recommended run, but again, get the Mile by Mile Guide) and of course the Georgetown loop, all reinforced that feeling. the Colorado railroad museum, which i visited today, was everything i thought it would be and more. As a plus, i finally got to see the narrow gauge engine of my dreams, IRCA (FEGUA) No. 40. She looks just as good as she does in every picture i've seen of her.

Basically, this is just me expressing my feelings, take if for what you will. maybe i should talk to klinger before i go next time...make sure that blasted diesel stays in the yard where it belongs:hehe:

When my family lived in Boulder and I came back on leave from the Far East (in the '60's and '70's), I used to like to make the auto trip up and over Corona Pass (now called "Rollins Pass"). This is the run from Rollinsville over the pass to Winter Park. You can't do it now because Needle Eye Tunnel is blocked on the East side and Rifle Notch Gap is blocked on the West side. You can dismount and hike to the top though. The view at the pass is magnificent.

According to this news site:

http://www.winterparklodgingcompany.com/2010/04/23/winter-park-corona-pass-to-reopen/

Corona Pass may be re-opened for vehicular traffic.

Yeah. You need a 4-wheel drive vehicle now just to reach Needle Eye. Boulder County is not maintaining the road. I think they just want it to fade away and become impassable. They're winning.

EDIT: I'd say Google Maps messed up then because the road has been closed since 1990.

Hi All: I think my most favorite NG is the Durango & Siverton..Because the scenery in that area is so Beautiful..I loved that Train ride and if can recall I think the train was pulled by #482 just after it had been restored..

I agree that the Rio Grande Scenic is absolutely spectacular. By the way did you see the new Rio Grande Diner and Combine that the Railroad Museum just got. (I really want to see those new additions). But did you manage to find all of the old Georgetown Loop Equipment too? (Last time I rode on the GL was in 2002 behind 44).
I might have to talk to Klinger to. (As I can tell he volunteers there).

Yes, i found all the old Georgetown loop stuff. like i said, to me, 40 is the best looking 2-8-0 on the narrow gauge, and to get to see her was fufilling a great dream. Too bad she wasn't steamed up and running around the loop, but hey, she looked like she was well taken care of, very well loved, even on the roundhouse storage track. maybe one day i'll get to sit in her right seat, and run her around the loop.

As an added plus, i got to see my first galloping goose! I've had a video of the restoration and first run of Goose #5 since i rode the D&SNGRR (also on the 2000 trip) and i've always had a soft spot for the crazy lookin' things. Next up; ride one of them.

wait a minute...there was a streamlined combine and a diner on the roundhouse tracks. Those wouldn't happen to be them, would they?

PS i think i saw klinger lurking around the Silver Plume yards, but i didn't say anything to him. i was still a bit peeved at the lack of a steam engine on the front at that point.

You saw me but didn't bother to say hi?????

That would have been last Tuesday right? That was a fun day. 12 had its monthly boiler wash, I repainted the smoke box, we re-plumbed the fireman's side branch pipe. We did not get everything done we wanted, but we tried

The reason 21 was on the train is because 1203 was having electrical problems. We barely made it half way to the shop before it completely died on us.

Needless to say its fixed now, and both 12 and 1203 are running on the normal trains.

Next time drop by and say hi!

I was in Colorado the other week too, at Dillion, and every time we went by the Georgetown Loop which was every day steam has been running. The end cab, if the ex SP Laws to Keeler, the last time I checked it was sold some where down in Mexico I believe, then the former railroad might have sold it to the Georgetown Loop?
I was on the Leadville Colorado & Southern while I was in Colorado and I got to ride in the cab on the was back, and got to use the whistle. They only have the two diesel locos, but at the station they have the beautiful 2-8-0 on display, I would love to see that run again!

the guy i talked to in Leadville said, and i qoute, "It would take 1 million dollars to get the 641 running again."

so yeah, anybody know someone who can get that?

oh and klinger, i prefer lurking...it suits me :hehe:
