I have 2 Nvidia GTX580,s however they are not used in SLI with Trainz 12, and yesterday i got a ATI Gigabyte triple fan 6970 oc version, well it looks as if the ATI 6970 leaves Nvidia for dead must be the 2gb onboard ram
both cards have been used in the same computer with the same hardware
and ATI has come out well on top pushing a 42 inch LED LCD Monitor
what have you good people found with your video cards

Steve I too went from an NVidia 480 to the ATI6970. The 6970 is a great video card for Trainz in my opinion. It also runs cooler too so this is an even better.

According to a review by bit-tech.net the 580 1.5gb and the 480 1.5gb and even the ati 5970 2gb better the 6970 (standard not o/c I think) in most of the test games.

Hi fran, I am not sure I understand your post exactly. Do you mean the 5970 is better than the 6970 ? Because I plan to upgrade my 4870 1gb for one of those 2 gb video cards.

hi mates

what would this card be like its new
AMD / ATI RADEON HD 6350 2GB DDR3 PCI-EXPRESS 16X VIDEO CARD LOW PROFILE

thanks ron

i also have 2 x ATI 5970 DUAL CPUs and due to the fact that Trainz doesn't like and video card with a dual CPU i would steer clear of it believe me it's only wasting money as far as Trainz is concerned
ATI 5970 is faster than 1 6970 in game that take advantage of dual GPU's BUT TRAINZ DOES NOT

my video card list
2X Nvidia 8800 GTX
2X Nvidia 9800 GTX+
2X ATI 5970 DUAL GPUs so 4 GPU'S all up between 2 cards
2x Nvidia 580 GTX
1X ATI 6970 and this one is the best of all even if the others are in crossfire or sli mode
the computer hardware i use is, i have 4 computers
Gigabyte motherboard 2 x Z68X-UD7-B3
CPU Intel 2600K
Ram corsair 12 gb dominator 1600 in both

the other 2 computers are both X58 Motherboards 1 Gigabyte the other XFX
with the same ram as above

Now why a 42 inch led lcd monitor ???? because i can because i wanted it
because i work my butt off to have what i like

i am sorry if it sounds like bragging to some but the post was to let others know that ATI was a better video card for Trainz than Nvidia, the 580 is jerky
the ATI 6970 is not
and with the ATI 6970 2 GB RAM you can get the standard version or like i did the overclocked version
So don't waste your money on a dual GPU Video card

Good on ya Steve. Will sure make trying to 'drive' from the cab looking out that small front window of most of the US loco cabs, much more enjoyable. The economic situation in the UK must be worse that reported out here or Deano hasn't caught up with the fact that the standard minimum TV is 42 inch these days. Cheers

Have a look at the site (bit-tech.net) and find the review. Whichever card you get beware they are power hungry, 300watts + under load.

When people talk about video cards that use lots of power that is really a by-product of a very good video card, either you want a video card to do the job or you don't,
as you can see from my list of video cards and also keep in mind i have tried them in either crossfire and sli and nothing matches a single ATI 6970 for Trainz

All of the top end cards use around 300 watts, and as you say it's a by product of having one.
Trainz (unless things have changed) didn't support/use SLI or xfire.
By the way that's a fair set of cards you have.

A lot of people have said that Trainz doesn't support SLI or Crossfire ?
well Trainz 2006 2009 2010 all ran better for me with SLI enabled, game play was about 15% to 20% smoother, but not in TS12, single card only
Either right or wrong one thing is for sure Trainz does not like dual GPU's on 1 video card it will work far better using 2 different cards single GPU SLI OR CROSSFIRE before version TS12
also please keep in mind that the ATI 5970 HAD 2 GB OF RAM, 1 GB per GPU
And the ATI 6970 HAS 2GB OF RAM FOR 1 GPU So there is a massive difference between the two cards right there, the ATI 6970 has a far bigger memory to recall assets and remember your route
