texture issue with some models???

Hi does anyone know why some of model textures for no apparent reason have gone, 'funkie' for lack of a better 'polite' word ... for some reason a few of my model textures have either turned transparent with multicolored dots or black with said colored dots, and no amount of updating model or database repair will sort it, ... yet using content editor to view said affected models they display just fine ...

so would br greatful for any hints of tips please tht do not include a complete reinstall of Gbs of data
