System Restore

I won"t bore you with the details of why I had to do it, but today I did a system restore to the 13th of Jan.The guy at my computer suppliers told me it was a "safe restore" and I wouldn"t lose any files. However on doing it I recieved a message telling me that certain Trainz files were being saved under another name.Lo and behold, when I tried to open my Route in Surveyor I got "No Map Selected".If the route still exists, I don"t know where it is, so can anyone suggest how to find it? I Saved a the Route as a CDP day ago, but that means I have lost a days work...:o

The guy didn't know from army beans. Even a "Safe" restore will not retain anything later than the restore point. The restore is an Image kept in your Restore directory which is a copy of your system as it was saved during the backup. Probably what he meant is that you will not lose any system files essential to your computer operation. It will also set the Registry back to the restore point which means that if you registered any files or applications, they will be reset. I'm afraid you'll have to reinstall everything you lost.

System Restore normally only affects Windows files and the Registry. It's highly unusual for System Restore to do anything with data files, but of course Trainz does store its data files within its program folder tree whereas nearly all other programs store them in separate areas.

You should be able to undo the Restore. However, I wouldn't like to guess whether that will recover your missing data. You can also then re-do the Restore afer undoing it if you wish, provided you do so before the relevant Restore point gets deleted by more recent ones.

If you do manage to recover the data, I can't resist suggesting that you back it up immediately :)

Hmmm.It could have been worse, except that I did a lot of work in the last 2 days.I also found that the "My Pictures" folder had disappeared.Theres an earlier copy secreted away in the dungeons of my PC, but all of my screenies have disappeared.Ho hum...:(

As Columbo would say, "Just one more thing"....my screenshots are still there in the UK thread so from what I know they must still be in my PC , right?

Restore

Hi lewisner,

The MS system restore is never safe for data, only windows system components. I use Norton Go Back when something goes haywire. I have even deleted one of my routes by mistake and when I realised what I had done all I had to do was reboot and invoke Go Back then select a time to go back too. In this case I selected 1 hour previous, let it do it's thing, delete assets.tdx and hey presto my route was back there and usable. Only lost 1 hours work.
Norton Go Back is part of Norton System Works.

Cheers,
Bill69.

I am afraid that whether or not the pictures are still somewhere save on your HD has nothing to do with them showing in the UK topic here on the site. To have your pictures shown on a website the pictures need to be hosted on a website. With a link to that place the pictures here can be seen.

Which means if you want to keep them on your computer, return to the photo host site and download them.

Yep, this way you can use the internet as a stand-alone back-up system. if you are patient enough you can use all the free host sites to upload all critical data and get it back after a re-install :hehe:

I"ve retrieved my last copy of my route from 1.5 days days ago and its OK except for 2 items of content a) The new Bridge kit trusses which I installed have vanished and left the Spline Points hanging in the air.b) An asset called Embankment End has vanished too. In both these cases CMP says the aseets are installed and committed and not faulty. They show in the list in Surveyor but will not appear on the ground, nor can I move or remove the Spline Points.Anyone got any idea how to sort this out?

I only use 04 and have restored my computer many times and have never had a file go missing. What will seem missing is any registry entry that was updated, so if an item needs to look at the registry for a path etc this will be missing. all files on the hard drive are where they were. Deleting the cach file (or assets.tdx) and let trainz rebuild is one possible reason it wont show as the cach may have been restored to an early point. TO or CMP should still see the maps location.

OK.... so a few assets are missing and I lost 1.5 days work.So I set to work restoring the lost work and it takes me a day. However today I decide to try deleting assets.tdx.I copy everything in site then press "delete".I then open YTS2006 and find to my horror that THE LAST DAYS WORK HAS BEEN UNDONW!!! However, still reeling from this I pan further down the line and find that it has RESTORED the missing 1.5 days work and DELETED the last days worth!! I swear this is the most screwy programme ever to run on a PC....:( :o :'(
