Subway (PATH) Simulator?

I was down in Cincinnati the other day and happened across a piece of software called "Subway Simulator". The back of the box described it as a simulation of the New York PATH system from New Jersey into (and through) New York's Manhattan Island.

The 'recommended OS' was only Windows 98/XP so that gave the rough age of this software, but the price was attractive at only $9.95. I still have a functional Windows XP Pro computer (that has TRS2004 on it) so I could install if I bought it.

Has anyone else ever seen (or run) this simulator? If so, is it worth the money?

Bill

I haven't bought it because I haven't gotten a straight answer as to whether it has any crippling copy protection or what kind, and the manufacturer refuses to state whether or not that's the case.

Google 'subway simulator game', there is lots of info

I realize that, and have done so. As RRSignal says, information concerning such things a copy protection aren't forthcoming from the manufacturer and I have no intention of buying something that requires a CD to be present in the drive at all times.

That wasn't your original question, if it is in the 98/xp era it will probably require the cd in the drive.

Nothing's changed; Even stuff produced today (e.g. X-Plane) requires that.

Incidentally, the X-Plane people were also less-than-forthcoming about the copy protection on that product as well.

In the several write-ups I've seen, the specifications now include Vista so I'm assuming that there is/was some sort of upgrade from the original version. This leads me to assume that the one I found may be the original and that's the reason it's so cheap.

One disturbing requirement, that sounds rather ominous is this one (emphasis mine):

"The PC running World of Subways requires an active internet connection."

If this is true, then I may not want to mess with it as I like to choose when I'm connected, not the game.

Also, most of the forum chatter appears to be from around 2008 or so. That makes it three years old even for the 'later' version. So I guess my original question still stands: Has any one installed and run this simulation?

Bill

I play it all the time. It's a legit product.. I would get it off their website located @ world of subwayz. There's an expansion pack too! I would def add that.. It's a simple game but it's a lot of fun. It's just a subway simulator.. They came out with two other great games which I have too..

Bus SImulator and Berlin Subway..

Ah, okay. I wasn't questioning it's legitimacy at all. It looked good to me, but I'd never seen it before and just wondered what it was like. I just might go back down there and buy it.

Bill

The problem is that since it requires an internet connection, 1. Can you play without the internet, 2. What happens when the manufacturer decides to stop supporting it, and 3. What information is it phoning home?

Signal, I'm confused what you mean stop supporting. They have a support forum labeled in English and some foreign language. There support system is great.. They have 3 games.. World of Subwayz 1,2,3 (1 = PAth) (2=Berlin ) and coming out soon #London

I don't see them stopping any time soon "supporting the product" - You don't need an active internet connecting.. There no muti player option yet..(I don't know if there getting one) - The only problem with no internet is you can't get support (because their support is based off a forum)

Cheers

One of the many problems with DRM schemes like Product Activation (be it one-time, an internet tether, etc.) is that the manufacturer can and, almost certainly, eventually will decide to stop accepting activations. With normal, non-DRMed software, that means you can continue to use the software, albeit without manufacturer support. But with DRMed software, this means your investment is gone whenever the manufacturer decides to stop accepting activations. It's already happened with some big-name services, like one of Amazon's ebook services and Yahoo and MSN's Music services, to name just a few.

If WoS's publisher, Aerosoft, doesn't require an internet connection to actually use the game, why do they state that The PC running World of Subways requires an active internet connection"? I (and, I presume, Bill) are simply going by what they state on their site. I am open to the possibility that this is a miscommunication on their part.

Let me ask you this, can you say for absolutely certain that you don't need an internet connection (or make a phone call,) to activate the game? Are you absolutely certain you can run the game without an internet connection? Have you never, ever allowed the game program through your firewall? If so, that's very good news...though requiring a CD in the drive would still be deal-breaker for me. It might not be for Bill or others reading this thread though.

ETA: After poking around Aerosoft's forums (the publisher),which is not the same as the manufacturer's forums), I have confirmed that WoS does indeed use a product activation scheme, so all the problems and risks discussed above apply. That's definitely a deal-breaker. I'm still open to any input from you, Inn, or anyone else, especially if there are older, non-DRMed versions of the sim floating around. The publish does make mention of an "offline version" of which I will attempt to find out more, but even if such a version exists, it doesn't mean the above problems don't exist or won't in the future.

Thanks, RRS. I couldn't have stated it better. The last thing I want to get roped in to is a Steam-like setup where you are held hostage to the vagaries and whims of the "other end" of the tether from your game. Poking holes in my firewall is not something I take lightly so allowing a game to do so without knowing exactly what it is reporting is not going to happen.

If anyone can answer the questions posed in your post I'd certainly like to hear them also.
