lots of links in the article to other steel production sites

It all depends on what you are modeling: Basic Oxygen Furnace, Blast Furnace, Blast Oxygen Furnace, Electric Arc Furnace, Open Hearth, Rolling Mill, etc, as to the actual quantities for production of steel.

The working volume of a conventional blast furnace is the volume through which the gas produced at the tuyeres passes in contact with the materials in the furnace charge. The theoretical speed at which the materials of the furnace charge descend in the furnace is about 10 feet per hour for air-blown blast furnaces, and the materials charged into the furnace to produce one ton of iron typically comprise about 2 tons of ore, 0.9 tons of coke, 0.4 tons of limestone and 3.5 tons of air.

An EAF furnace is charged with about 86 percent scrap steel, and 14 percent iron.

I keep it simple.....

I use 20% limestone, 20% coking coal, 20% iron pellets and 40% iron ore to make molten iron in a blast furnace.

I use 50% molten iron and 50% scrap steel to make steel in open hearth furnace.

There are more facilities needed to make steel and you can get ideas and more information here:http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=20264

Good luck with your project.

Electric Arc Furnace

I saw a TV show on steelmaking and it showed an Electric Arc Furnace, it was awesome. A huge carbon electrode, melting the steel...BZZZZZZZZGHHHHT...1.21 Gigawatts...the only thing with that much power...is a bolt of lightening !
