If something you are downloading says "TRS2006 SP1" so do you need SP1 for it to work and what is SP1?

Does that mean you have to back up all the route's, rollingstock, edited routes and all the stuff you have downloaded?

if so do I just make a folder on my desktop?

Yes, just copy the "local" folder to your desktop. Nothing else required, afterwards, just copy it back, remove the "asset.tdx" file, then "cache/assets.bku", if it exists.
