SP1 patch time

Hi all,

The SP1 patch process has now been going for 4 hours. That's on a 3.1ghz processor 16MB RAM and a 240 GB solid state drive. Pretty much a brand new install (1 week) hardly much download from DLS, and a bit of learner mucking around, completely empty brand new pooter. And it still says "patching 49922 to 57720...". Also put the other two patches on (linked to from Shane's Trainz website). I don't want to crash it off, in case something stuffs up, or just have to do it again. That's getting towards 8 - 10 times longer than it took to install it, let alone patch it. It took 45 mins just to "unpack" it before the patching started.

Should I just go to bed and check it in a weeks time? How long is this supposed to take? From what I can suss out on here it can take a while..... but 4 hours +????? :(

Just go to bed, owning the latest light speed mega game computer is not an advantage when it comes to Trainz.
Downloading is governed by your ISP connection, not the size of your computers cojones, (they only help you get stiffer quicker). :p

Already downloaded the 1.8GB patch file. Even that took nearly 3 hours on a 6mbps internet connection. So no net interaction is happening during the actual patching. It's the actual running the patch file that's taken the 4+ hours so far.

Might help speed up the process if you disabled your anti-virus and temporarily unplugged from the net before installing, but with 16MB of RAM  is very poor unless you made a typo and meant to say the RAM on your system is 16gigs ?

Just disabled anti-virus See what that does... but won't really be able to tell. It might finish in 10 mins or 10 hours. I understand there's a problem with the progress bar not going past 1/2 way. So you can't tell. and yep....meant 16GB RAM. :)

This is just ridiculous. 5+ hours and it's till not past the "patching from.... " bit. Doesn't appear to be looping or frozen. CPU fluctuates between 8% - 11% for jaconverter.exe, dropping to 0% occasionally. Hard drives are working away.

I'm going ta bed. As they say, Not happy, Jan. :n:

You should not install SP1 as there is much post-SP1 problem to fix and many trainzer complain about it. See, you are already complaining about it ! :p

Good Morning Garahbara1
Unfortunately, the size of some of the files being handled can mean the update will take several hours to complete. This includes decompressing, and then updating, approximately 8-9GB of '.ja' files. These are the files that include all of the built-in content, etc. If you have other software running (including anti-virus, etc), then this can cause the update to run much slower.

Unfortunately, there really is no viable way for us to speed up the installation of SP1.

Several hours? You're not kidding! Went to bed after 6+ hours, checked again after about 8 hrs and still going. So it finished sometime between then and now. (14 hrs). One thing, do not leave your pooter and go do something else, especially if you have hibernate/sleep mode turned on. You'll find that setting under Control Panel/Power Options. Set it to "never" if you're going to run it overnight. When I checked it after 8 hrs, the pooter had hibernated. (mine was set to 30 mins). And of course, the progress bar problem gives you no idea how far the update has progressed.

Just as an indication of the speed of my pooter so you can judge your own.

AMD FX 8120 8 core processor 3.1 Ghz
16 GB RAM
240 GB Solid State Drive (Op sys and Trainz) (only thing on it, new pooter)
2TB Hard Disk Drive (1.8 GB patch file) (only thing on it).

**Note, may have run a bit quicker if patch file was on the SSD. CPU hovered between 8% - 10% dropping to zero frequently. Disabled anti virus (Kaspersky) after about 4 hours. No idea of the impact this had.

For some reason, the HDD says it has 4.2GB on it, yet the patch file is only 1.8GB.

NV3 Games folder is now 17.6GB.

Why I've put the space requirements there is that this is an empty/new install. Just got 2 routes, (bout 2 blocks each) and a couple of sessions. About 120 assets downloaded from DLS. So pretty much an empty install.

My old pooter that I've had Trainz 2006 on for years is a Athlon 1.8 Ghz 1GB RAM 80 GB HDD. Who knows how long it would've taken on that! Let alone even fit, with everything else I had on it!

Now to see if my turntable problem is fixed!! (see other thread).

Alan.

TOOT!

how much content do you have? Do you have the default 7 backup asset folders? These all play a part in the time it takes.

Brand new, pretty much empty install straight off the DVD. 10th Anniversary box set. Only had TS12 for less than a week. (got TS 2006 on another pooter). Nothing xfered from TS2006. Two routes, and a couple of sessions in TS12. No user created (my own created) assets. About 150 assets from the DLS extra. (150 MB) The routes take up about 3 "blocks" for one and just 1 block for the other (testing turntables). No backup folders. Brand new empty pooter. Only had that less than a week too.

Garahbara,

Your overall system specs sound equivalent to mine and a number of others here who also have custom beasts. However, it's not directed at how lightening fast our systems are as many others with mid range - low end range systems managed to follow the guide lines to a tee and rarely had any patch installation problems.

If it's not working out; Sometimes, one might suggest of re-installing the software.

Which does require to be a hefty task, but well worth it in the end. However, the choice is yours if you want to give that a go. Firstly, I would backup the contents of your existing TS12 installation folder and copying this over to an external drive. Followed by the tasks of freeing up your main drive by performing a disk cleanup and defrag before re-installing TS12. (I would usually disable my anti-virus before a clean re-install of the software & then apply the updates I have saved elsewhere. I would then transfer my saved data and re-enable my antivirus after all of this has been done).

It had taken me approximately an hour to install SP1, while the hotfix had taken roughly 30mins. But that's just me being me.

I hope it works out for you!

Cheers

Chuffbuff,

TOOT! :) As mentioned above, this is a brand new pooter. Picked it up last Tuesday. A week ago. The only things on it are the Op Sys (Windows 7 64 bit), Ms Office (home) and Trainz 2012. Picked up TS12 from the post office last Friday. 4 days ago. You could not get a more pristine environment to apply the patches. Only addition is about 150 MB downloaded through Content Manager. (Some Australian bits and pieces). No sessions or routes downloaded, nothing imported from old releases. I might just, only a teensie hesitant bit, accept the virus checker caused it by by checking the ins and outs of a duck behind of everything the patcher touched. Even though I turned it off after 4 hours. I'll try the hotfix later tonight (with virus checker turned off before I start) and see the timings for that.

CHeers,

Alan.

TOOT!

Just put the "hotfix" on. Albeit just 27MB. 2 mins or less for that one. No virus checker on. Think I might give my virus checker a good finger wag and wave a big stick at it! Do a Basil Fawlty on it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv0onXhyLlE

That I believe won't do much good without having SP1 installed. It stands to reason, that the hotfix was intended to fix issue's with the previous SP1 Patch and not with a stand-alone installation of TS12. It's likely useless for us to help with your current situation if you are too hesitant and impatient to take advice of carrying out the procedure which has been put forward.

With that being said; I am simply unable to help you further with your problems.

Good luck Grarahbara.

Chuffbuff,

I've put 4 lots of patches on so far. Each level of patch will not let you put it on until the previous one is done. There were two "hot fixes" to get it up to a level for SP1. Then the SP1 patch (8 hours worth) and then the latest hotfix. Pity the couldn't have delivered the latest version with the box set I only got last Friday. Perhaps that's why the box set was.....errrrrr......cheap (I'm mean on special). @ $22 + postage.

The reason why it's not included on box versions is because the discs were made before SP1 was released.

The digital download version may or may not have SP1 as part of it though.
