SP1: Is It Worth It?

Angry Trainz Nerd
Hello. I am a happy TS12 Build 49922 user. I figured it's time to get with the times, but I'm still skeptical about upgrading to SP1. My main question is about the thumbnail error. I heard in SP1, the famous "No Thumbnail" warning in TS12 has become an all out error, thus making the asset faulty. Now I have thousands of assets that show the "No thumbnail" warning, and with Mesh Viewer and CCP not working in Windows 8 for whatever reason, I'm left with working with thumbnails in the config, which I don't know much about aside from changing KUID's and asset names.

So basically, does SP1 still have the thumbnail error, or has it been fixed in one of the hotfixes?

You can install 2 separate TS12 installations on your PC (if it is big enough ... that way you can test SP1, and run the NKP Berkshire

I don't have enough space for that. The Berkshire would probably kill my crappy little laptop, it's a miracle I can play TS12 on it at all.

I'm looking at my TS12 SP1 install and the assets with missing thumbnails say "Warning: Required container 'thumbnails' is missing."

I think the error message applies to the uploading of newly created assets, presumably to ensure that all new assets have thumbnail in the future.

Edit: It's always best to do a full backup before installing any SP just in case, you could use some form of external device or 'Cloud' storage.

Stay at 49922 is your best bet then. If you feel you have to continue back up the user data folder first.
The thumbnail error is usually when there is a reference to one but there is no thumbnail (picture), easy to cure using edit in explorer not ccp.

SP1 plus 4 hot fixes, couldn't be better. Purchased my first FCT in over a year because i am happier with TS12 than i have been previously.

Another way is using Pev's Trainz Mesh viewer set to open with your TS12 installation. This will help you make a thumbnail. Then using AssetX by andi06, making a thumbnail table is done by using the repair drop-down menu under Repair. Closing this will prompt Save? Yes. Commit the asset in CM and all is done. Downloaded or imported assets only with the , not built-in. Hope this helps.
This is the way I've done it. For "Warning: Required container 'thumbnails' is missing." assets only.

No need to create a thumbnail, just copy and paste one from another asset into the folder of the asset that has the error message.

Works every time, no fuss, no hassle and no pain.

No need to do that, go into Content Creator find the thumbnail section where it shows the ".jpg" name click on the square with the dots and pick one of the texture files for the thumbnail.

His question was .................... So basically, does SP1 still have the thumbnail error, or has it been fixed in one of the hotfixes?

Why don't you just answer the question ?
If he could do what you suggest, he would have done it already, but as he stated in his post ...... "I'm left with working with thumbnails in the config, which I don't know much about".

All you had to say was, YES or NO.

I see nothing wrong with this method, except I have problems with Mesh Viewer under Windows 8, making the program completely useless.

Never, ever do this unless you really know what you are doing. The asset will be updated to a new Trainz build level and will probably be even more broken afterwards.

If I weren't going to run the NKP Berkshire, I probably wouldn't install the SP1 patch.

For me the NKP Berskshire DLC pushed me over the edge, along with the JointedRail TS12 sale for $19.99, (which includes a future free $20 payware gift voucher).

The thumbnail "error" is a content creator problem, as there were "rules" in place that somehow are not followed, thus creating a problem in SOME content. Same applied to some 25 WAV file items I had, some more "rules" not strictly followed caused them to need some fixes. So, to answer the question, properly, nothing is going to fix the thumbnail errors automatically. There is some manual intervention needed. Some third party creators, like Jointed Rail, have offered up updates for SP1 content compatibility. That's all I can say about it.
