Downloading fom the dls is fun getting drawn in to it bit like going to the toy shop from and everythings up for grabs but downloading from the dls can cuase problems ,viruses, bugs, etc how can one protect the computer and download as maytimes you like yet not get the problems that come with the downloads themselves i personally find it hard to stop downloading i mean i see something and WOW GOTTA AV THAT but onther hand you gotta think of impact on hardware it would be nice to have some where i can download as much as i like but not get the bugs that come with them

thanks

I've never gotten a virus from anything that I've downloaded from the DLS. I've found it reliable so far.

Me neither - you can't get a virus from where there isn't one. I doubt if any of the toerags who invent these things would bother to work out how to infect a .cdp file - there just aren't enough of us...

I've never got a virus from a 3rd party Trainz site either, though I guess there is some risk of such a site getting hacked.

.cdp files are data files that are unable to carry a virus without the Trainz application being compromised first, extremely unlikely. There are some .exe files on the DLS but they are very old and have been downloaded many times without any viruses being found.

If you stick to the .cdp format files there is no risk.

It's not possible to get a virus via the DLS (well, unless you go out of your way to do it), nothing on the DLS is 'executed' by trainz other than trainzscript, and trainzscript has no capabilities that would allow it to act as a virus or trojan.

The only way you could possibly[1] get a virus, would be if someone specifically wrapped up a .exe inside an asset, then told you that you need to open it for edit, and execute the .exe inside. Pretty much anyone with a brain would realise there was something wrong being told to do that :)

[1] Even then, I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that Auran strips .exe files out from assets in the upload process, and I'm not about to try just to prove a point :)

Exactly what bugs have you gotten? If there were some nasty bugs and such on the DLS, I have a feeling there would be a ton of threads specifically about "I got a virus from the DLS!"

Putting aside social engineering, where people deliberately download and run a malicious executable, malware can be spread any time vulnerabilities exist in a piece of software. If your software is not appropriately patched, you can get malware from maliciously-crafted JPGs, PDFs, MS-Word, Apple QuickTime and Adobe Flash content, for instance. The latter four are pretty popular for spreading malware right now.

I strongly doubt that Auran has done the security testing necessary to toughen up Trainz. It's difficult to do, and Trainz' market is so small. Vulnerabilities have been discovered in other, larger-market games, but usually discovery is a function of time plus and the popularity of the product.

You also have to be aware, every time new features are added or code is changed, more vulnerabilities are potentially opened up.

Personaly I use an anti-virus that scans all my downloads before they get past the desktop, I keep this anti-virus software updated by using daily updates.
So far, it has worked flawlesly, not had any problems with malware of any kind for over 2 years.

While CDP files are data files, they can contain scripted assets which once installed run GameScript programs within Trainz. However, AFAIK GameScript cannot write to files other than Jetlog, in which case even scripted assets are safe.

You should be more worried about everything else on the net & what browser & software you have to protect yourself. The DLS is the least of your worries.

Exactly. 75% of the malware I remove are fake antivirus programs, the rest are the result of clicking on 'click here for free stuff' links. Keep your OS, browser and antivirus up to date & run malware scan periodically (SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes are my favorites).
