So I want to get into HO scale model railroading...

Yes,but if your planning to buy a steam locomotive with sound, becareful because some brands don't have good sounds and from what I'm thinking,MTH has good steam locomotives that have good sounds within a reasonable price range and one other thing: becareful when taking out the engine and tender because the wires linking them together is very fragile and will break causing it not to work, like bachmann spectrum's 2-10-0 decapod for instance!:o

i agree with this as it happened to me with a bachman 2-8-0!

Is nem the HOOP-Hook style?

The very same. Horrible, horrible things they are.

They're ugly to look at, completely unrealistic in appearance, and the little hook part underneath (meant for automatic uncoupling) tends to jam in the sleepers half the time. Their only saving grace is they can sort of couple with the even uglier OO scale coupler standardized by Hornby (although expect derailments and wagons unexpectedly uncoupling if you try it) :p.

And to make matters worse Lima tended to be cheap skates and moulded the coupling onto the carriage/loco body or bogie, meaning you have to do a bit of surgery if you want to add more prototypical couplers like Kadees.

But I digress...

So if I bought a nickel alloy Bachmann track pack from amazon, would that be an okay start? I already have a little B&O tank engine for now.

If you ever think of getting into N-Scale I know where you can get alot of it cheap. Atlas track, switches, working block signals, ready to run double track layout, cars, locomotives etc. No junk.

Sure; if you have the patience to wait to buy your next pieces. Personally, I wouldn't be concerned about the track right now, but I'm not very disciplined! I would be looking for whatever could buy me the most FUN!

If you are able to settle for decent track and a tank engine for awhile, then I admire you! Good Luck!
