Smoke monster

might be back?
I guess that TRS2010 wants me to model the island from lost, as from time to time, a black smoke will appear on a new baseboard for no reason. There is also no way to get rid of it. I don't know what is up with it, but it is VERY annoying.

I get the same thing. Sometimes there will be more than one occurrence and sometimes it moves around from one place to another. I have never seen the phenomenon in Driver however.

I had a similar problem with a big smoke generator last year.

I know we are using different versions, and your problem is probably different, but this may hopefully be of some help.

There was no apparent source "block" to click on for me to delete the smoke in Surveyor. The cloud was so huge and variable it was impossible to see anything through it, or where it was coming from. Eventually I did manage to find it after reducing particle effect to the lowest setting before “off”, and setting surveyorfov= to its lowest numerical value (35, I think it is) for a close-up look in wireframe view - directly overhead. The source block was the scale size of around 6 inches at its longest edge, and the same colour as the baseboard!

I did try using it again, by setting a pipe bollard in the ground as a marker, and placing the smoke block next to it. Even then it was too difficult to find, so I made a note of the kuid and permanently deleted it from my Trainz asset list.

Thankfully I have now forgotten the kuid.

I wonder if your smoke may also have a woefully undersized, almost impossible to find source block?

Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers

Squatters. Hobos. They make camp wherever they can, and run off before you can roust 'em.

Ghosts of Trainz...I love it! As if the phantom crossing bells and locomotive sounds aren't spooky enough!

Baseboards dry out and become prone to fires. It's an effect of global warming predicted years ago by the International Panel on Climate Change. :p

You should be able to delete the item if you cut and paste a blank bit of board on the area around where the smoke is coming from (make sure you have it set to paste objects not texture or elevations). The larger the patch, the more likely you are to delete the item (the creator might have put the smoke attachment point a long way from the origin of the object).

If you can identify the asset, you'll probably find it has a username beginning with some character that puts it at the top of a sort list and it becomes the item of default choice when you accidentally click and place an object.

At one time i had downloaded a route that included an item called MYST,Which was very cool, it was supposed to be like fog that hangs over a river,Well once i found out which asset it was i used it on another layout of mine, only when i got tired of it, it would not let me get rid of it!!!I finally had to punch a hole in the layout, and then replace everything else that was lost.i have deleted that asset from my game now

This is actually the display burning up because you're spending too much time in Surveyor. :)

I had the same issue awhile ago too after I tried using a smoke generator around some factories. This was a pain in the ... to remove, and I stay clear of the asset now!

John,

It’s a pity not to use them as you can get some really good effects. I hope we haven't put people off trying them.

These four are worth passing round, and should give people no problems.

They have very identifiable and grabbable parts as you can see from the 10m grid scaling, so can be easily moved or deleted. I’m sure there are many more which I have not found.

From left to right:

Black smoke ground - kuid:101031:60048 (smoke randomly rotates - my favourite)
Smoke Generator - kuid:225064:4010903 ( smokes vertically only)
Smokestack 13m high - kuid2:77573:24123:1 (stack partly buried for clarity, smokes vertically only)
Smoking chimney - kuid:74704:100112 (stack partly buried for clarity, smoke randomly rotates)

No Bogarting!;)

Cheers

Thanks, Casper. I'll give those a try.
