Shift Key lets Spline Points Stick on Textured Terrain!

I posted this as a Tips and Tricks and it seems to me that very few people would see it that way. So I've posted it again as a regular post:

I just discovered something really useful, and I wish I had known about it years ago!

Often when you try to lay a new spline on terrain that has been textured, it will not stick.

If you hold down the Shift key when you click to set the second spline point, it will stick. Fantastic!

Basically, what's happening is if there's another point whether it's track or regular spline, holding down the shift key, while clicking make it ignore the other points.

Did you know if you hold down the CTRL key, when you click, it adds on another spline. So there's no need to click twice.

????:confused::confused:???

You are talking about when you move a spline point you hold shift to stop it from joining another spline point. I'm talking about laying the spline down initially.

Mick.

You shouldn't need 'shift' to start a spline unless you are laying it over (or very near) another spline - a trackside fence over spline grass or something similar. I have never had a spline fail to 'start' just because the ground was textured....

It doesn't fail to start, what happens very often with me is that you click again to end the spline, and it won't stick, it keeps moving around with the mouse. Pressing Shift while doing your end click makes it stick.

Am I the only one that this happens to??:(

Andy, it looks like he is saying that "ending" the spline is the issue.

Personally I have never had any problem with either end of a spline on a textured surface, but if I suddenly should, I will remember this tip.

I don't think a "textured surface" is even in the issue. I know that's what he said, but I think it's just a poor choice of description. I've had several situations where I couldn't end a spline because I had other spline points around and I was zoomed out too far.

Maybe :)

Splines can be tricky to 'start' OR 'end' if there is another spline nearby: fences near grass splines as I stated before, telephone lines near fences, any spline on-or-near another spline often as not needs the 'shift' key at one or both ends. But just laying a spline over ground texture shouldn't be an issue, as far as I can recall I have never had a spline-won't take-on-texture issue, certainly not even close to often enough to think of it as 'usual' behaviour....

Maybe I am misunderstanding what's going on. I'll do some testing to find out if it is in fact another spline point nearby, hidden by the texture.
Mick.

Nice one!

I've not noticed a link with textures either.

However, it's still a great tip.

I've always used the Shift key purely to stop splines snapping together when the end point is being laid close to another spline point, but never knew that the same trick could be used when laying the first point.

Until now, when having trouble starting a new spline in close proximity to another, I've always had to place the first point further away from where I want it, then use the Move spline key to precisely place it. Now I can place it first time, every time.

I'll be using this tip, big time!:Y:

Thanks Mick.

Cheers

No I get the same problem and have been doing the same as you have. Think it may be a TS12 thing?

Mick,

No need to test. I've had the same issue. The spline appears to "stick" to the mouse and the only way to release it is to use the shift key.

I like the CTRL click. I must try that one.

There's a thought! Casper is 04, I'm 10. Anybody else in TS12 have the problem?????

Yes, and I just used this trick today... Of course I knew about the "Shift to prevent snap joining" but never thought to use it to get the mouse pointer to let go!! :D
