School and liking trains

I never really had problems with being the "train nut" of school. Then again, I did move across town to a different set of schools starting in the 6th grade (now going into junior year high school), so I got to have a mostly fresh start (still a few people that I knew). But now instead of saying I'm a "train nut", I just tell them I plan to become a train engineer, and I've grown up enjoying trains. The trick for me is to keep it calm and casual.
My interest in technology also helps...I'm the one my friends (and family) come to for computer advice and tech support. I'm like the one man Geek Squad!

My dad's Ford F350 has a diesel V8 with turbo. Boy can that thing haul. Last Sunday I was with my Dad while he was hauling a loaded down two axle open trailer with the bed of the truck being full. There was a caravan of three tricked out hondas with older teens in them. They flipped my dad and I off (for no reason) and as the last car passed us he stepped on the gas and to their surprise we flew passed them and got in front of them as the road turned from two to one lanes. I wish I had a camera with me to take a picture of the look on their faces. The funny thing is we were going up hill and the tricked out cars were easily doing 75.
They talk about "tricking" their cars out with better parts.... my latest encounter a group was talking about putting in a new turbo..... I tought to myself, Boy those have got to be some weak turbos, because im pretty sure ive got a few rumbling by on the mainline that could turn their junky little taped up honda racers inside out

we went to utah and passed everybody while doing the limit in a 2006 nissan titan. it was cool.

Lol. Nobody is going to get banned. But to get back on the subject, one should never be ashamed of their hobbies I used to not really have much friends because I was afraid if they ever found I liked trains I would be made fun of. Not the case anymore. Lol
I do get teased sometimes, but I don't care. So what if I like trains. Those who have a problem with that can take a long walk off a short pier. 
Basically what i'm saying is that there is nothing wrong with having different interests. It doesn't mean that you lack intelligence or have mental problems, it just mean that your interests aren't the same as others.
When my mother was "funny" about my interests in trains, I said this:
" Would you rather me like railways and vespas (Italian scooters) or be like the other kids who ride skateboards,vandalise property (both public and personal), swear constantly and will probably become alcoholics and drug addicts."

Almost 17, and everyone knows that trains are a big interest of mine(everyone one from now back into kindergarden; I come across some of my old schoolmates when I change classes and schools), and they all know that its a family occupation, and they find it somewhat cool, so I've never found any problems on that front. I wouldn't say popular, because no one at my school is "popular" in the sense of some sort of school hierarchy(unless you include the ridicule and snickering that the upper classmen give to lower classmen), other than that we all just "hang out". People have their groups and things, but no one really disses someone for a passion or pastime they have; it reflects their personality, history, and environment that they live in. Sometimes it's rather interesting. Now, if you were to inquire about the people at our rival school, they probably would find it rather funny that I like trains(or anything the majority of teenagers don't like that an individual or small group would)!

Some people may think me weird for it, but many respect my interest in Trains. Same deal as Isaac, long time interest; however I don't recall it being a family occupation. People I know like cars and planes, so one can go from there as to the retrospect of it all.
When I refer to family occupation, a lot of people in my family(mostly on my dad's side, grandfather was operator on the B&O) worked on railways.
My family's history with railroads is mainly working as conductors on Southern Pacific's bay area commuter trains. I take pride in the fact that my family has taken part in railroad history...

I actually got into trains because it was a popular hobby back when I was at junior school in the mid 1970s. Every evening after school a crowd of us would take up position just outside the local station and collect the numbers from the arrivals and departures.
Sadly, since then the hobby has become quite stigmatised and just seen as very uncool. My colleagues at work know about my interest in railways (and Trainz too!) and, while they're very tolerant, I think they view it as a kind of strange eccentricity. People think cars are much sexier! :hehe:

I meant off roading to make it rock.
When I took my recent trip up to Illinois, people seemed to be suprised that I was taking the train. One responce I got was," Why? They are so slow, and are realy dangourous". That was from a fellow student. This same student is also the same one who would curse at the railroads for having the trains go by slow due to the maintence at that time. And apon telling him it was the maintinence, his reply was to tear it up, turn it into road, and use the steel to make more automobiles.

Well, Texas seems to love long comutes, and poluting our air, so Id say no one besides myself and the railfans I know or dont would care. Then again, if they did that, there would be less of a rail trafic jam at our famous "Tower 55" AKA chokehold of America.
Personally I like those big two cylinder engines big enough to fit in entirely.
Then it's funny to make fun of their little 50hp douchemobiles when you're constantly driving or firing 1500hp plus locomotives. Compare them and see if they make fun of you anymore.

I was known as Train Boy back in elementary school, but when middle school came around, i was outcasted for my love steam locomotives and railroading. I became a bit quiet about it for a while, as soon I went to high school though, I just started to be myself. I realy didn't care what others thought, if they didn't like it they could..............we'll leave that part blank. But I guess having long hair, and being in a metal band kinda throws a wrench in the works too lol. I graduated and Im still somewhat an outcast, but in the end, people will get to know you, and they will either put you aside, or build a respect for you.

Well, I don't have any friends that like trains. Sadly, the only people I know of that are really into trains are: my brother, my dad, my grandpa, my dead grandpa, my dead grandpa's brother (who is alive) and, well, nobody after that. All of the kids at school make fun of me and tease me (which I think is sad, for two reasons, I'm going into 6th grade, and I go to a private religious school) for absolutely no reason. I remember that in kindergarten I would almost always bring in my wooden Thomas the Tank Engine trains and people would ask "could I play with your choo choo train?" and, the one that I hated the most was: "could I play with your chunka chunka choo choo?". Kids have always thought of me weird because I'm the only one who actually likes trains, ships, and airplanes. Also they think it's weird that I can tell them what kind of car is passing by on the road. I also have another bad spot on my situation, is that the closest railroad to me is almost 10 miles away, and it has very little traffic. Plus, it's a class 3 shortline.
