Running Rivers Downhill?

I am working on a layout that involves a mountain pass and an incline. As the foundation to build from, I created a multi-board platform and gave it a slope. I'll build up certain mountain areas, but that slope will provide the ground for the tracks. I was thinking of running a river along the tracks, as if the tracks are using the natural cut of the river to find a path. But when I paint water into the depressions I created for the riverbed, it comes out level, so I can't get a river that runs down the slope.

Is there a "river spline" of such a thing that would let me draw a river coming down the slope? I will probably add some waterfalls, but I don't want to have to do that the whole way down.

If you're using Trainz water, you can't slope it. You put in river base until the base rises out of the water, or goes too deep into the terrain, (depending which way you're going) and then you add a waterfall.

To avoid steep banks, start with a shallow area that is wider than the proposed waterway, jumping up or down at the areas where the waterfalls occur, and then do the river, or stream in this shallow area.

I raise or lower the terrain five meters at the waterfalls.

The river or stream base should be app. ten meters below the bottom of the shallow area. This makes it easier to adjust the terrain at the water level.

I set my water level about seven or eight meters above the river or stream base, and I use "stream 4" to paint the water at the waterfall.

With a little practice, you can get good results.

Sadly the rivers won't run downhill, but there are ways to get around that.

Various people have used splines and textures that simulate down-flowing water with great results.

Just out of curiosity I did a DLS search for river spline as a description and came up with 14 of them. You have to check 2004 and earlier (only 8 appear if you only check 2004). You might take a peek at them.

NJCurmudgeon: Here is a example of what can be done with just textures..Splines will eat up a lot of your frame rate..

Gfisher did a set of splines for rivers and creeks. They differ from most river splines on the DLS in that they are translucent like the built in Trainz water so they will show the texturing of the bed, but being splines you can set them on a grade.

They were done for 2004, so be sure to check that box if you look for them on the DLS.

There are a lot of creative people out there. I came out of the graphic design business, so I can really appreciate the work that goes into creating this stuff.

One of (if not the only one) my favorite river systems is Cyberstorm's whitewater system. The water "track" is laid and then the whitewater "trackside" objects are added to it, with some seperate scenery rapids and waterfalls to go along with it. ;) These are animated with different flowing speeds available and have sound. :cool:

Tonight, I gave on my Yooper thread...a new way to do water in 20 steps...I'll have 1000 more views in tommow. And I am a Bull. But I love all you guys, I just want to be apprecited.
