Running Multiple

What is the setup for running multiple versions of trainz? (I.E 2009,2010,2012) without messing up my previous installs?

The main considerations on that front are patching and Content Manager related.

On the patching side, it is important to check which folder it is attempting to patch before you start the process.

On the Content Manager side, it will default to the last used version of Content Manager for it's file associations, but my Trainz Protocol Changer can override it.

In terms of messing up previous installs, this is unlikely apart from what is mentioned above, although to be safe it's best to install all the versions as standalone versions and not as an addon pack if prompted.

Multiple installs can go in the default location with no trouble. TS12 will be in the N3V Games folder and TS2009 and 2010 will be in the auran folder. Nothing will be stuffed up.

It's recommended to not install into Program Files as it is guarded highly and may cause permission issues.

I have mine installed to my external hard drive, which is H:/.

So I currently have:
H:/Beta TS12
H:/TRS2006
H:/TS2010
H:/TS12 Multiplayer
H:/UTC

And this has not caused any problems for me. :)

Ok Thanks How Do I Know Which folder is the correct folder for patching, FYI I Just Got TRS2010 which is the reason behind this post:p

That depends on where you've installed the versions - for a TS2010 patch, you need to point it to the TS2010 install folder, for a TS2009 patch, you need to point it to the TS2009 install folder, and for TS12 patches, they need to be pointed to the TS12 install folder (if you do indeed get TS12).

You can normally get the correct folder by right-clicking the shortcut on the Desktop and using Open File Location (Vista/7/8) or Properties > Shortcut > Find Target (XP and earlier)

Basically, direct the patch to wherever your TS2010 installation is. It'll be up the top of the patcher. If its in the wrong location, click on the '...' next to the installation directory, to choose the actual one.

Thanks Guys! And Shane I Am Getting TRS12 It's Already Ordered Just Waiting For Delivery!!!!

That's normal - don't forget that my tutorial site also contains useful information when it comes to things like that, including my Trainz Protocol Changer which can be used for quickly switching file associations between the later versions. (It can take a while to load on it's first run, but after that it uses cached information unless requested otherwise)
