Route vs Session

Hello All,

I created a view routes. If I want to merge with other, the tracks ar missing. I noticed that if I edit the session I can see the tracks, but if I edit the route, the tracks is missing. Maybe I did not save correctly. I always click save and not save as, and I then click Ok (right mark) on the default selection. I tried to save as new route with new name, but the tracks is only visible on the session. This plays a role when merging.

Can that route be fixed so that the tracks is visible.

Is there somewhere a site where I can read more about how to correctly save routes and sessions

Thank you
Leendert

Merge the session into the route.

Don't edit session when working on a route.
Don't switch to the session layer when editing a route.
Don't save the session when editing a route.

When editing a session don't add track but stick to consists and rules.

When you added the track you did so in the session layer. When you saved you saved both the session and route. If you only open route for edit a new session layer is created, it will mot open the last session. I always edit session so as to keep any settings that are only found in the session. On exit you can do a merge of session layer to route layer or leave it as long as you open edit session next time.
When you merge change the name of the session layer so it is different to the one you merge into. This will merge the route and add both the session layers, you can then merge one layer into the other.

The track you added was in a session layer which, by your description, was saved as the default session of your route. When you then saved the route as a new route, the session (with the tracks) was not saved.

Route layers and session layers have been a constant source of confusion.

My general rule, also explained by Oknotsen in the post above, is when you create a new route from a blank baseboard save both the route and the session and give the session a clear name (not default). From that point onward always load and edit the named session. Never load and edit the route alone unless you know exactly what you are doing.

I always make sure that all track, track objects and common scenery assets are placed in a route layer - I typically have 6 or more route layers. I place consists, track marks, triggers and session specific scenery assets in session layers, with as many or more session layers in use. I always lock layers that I am not currently working in.

One weakness of Surveyor that contributes greatly to the confusion between sessions and routes is that it does not tell you, for example by a menu bar message, which layer is currently active.

This simple change would be a MAJOR plus for TANE.

TRAINZ Support says "In regards to an indication of which layer is in use, a feature request is present in our system for this however I cannot say when or if such a feature may be implemented."

Session/Route confusion is very prevalent and a big indicator in the top menu bar is an easy fix that should be implemented with an ASAP patch.

not only that, but there are 2 kinds of sessions. One can be edited, and one cannot.

Hmmmm. I can only assume that you mean purchased DLC sessions, as those that cannot be edited. Have you tried using CM to make a clone of a DLC session and then tried editing the clone?

Did not mean to be vague. I meant that you cannot edit a saved session, even though I would love to most of the time. (At least, I cannot seem to).
