Route Builders, please read

The Trainz Resources Directory is run by me for you! I now invite all route builders with completed or functional routes to have them promoted in the Directory.

For those of you without a web site, I'll build a page about your route for you so that those considering it can see what it offers:
  • Description of the route
  • What version(s) of Trainz does it work on
  • Photos (3 or 4)
  • Helpful advice to users
  • What's supplied
  • What else is required
  • Link to the route on the DLS
People can then make an informed decision and download the route from the DLS.

If you have a web site, I will list your route(s) and web site link for you. Please go here to see an example: I'll also build you a page if you want it.

All I ask is that the route can be used and enjoyed in its current downloadable state.

If you're a route builder, bookmarking the link may not be the solution. It takes a lot of effort to get something like this off the ground and if there's not enough interest shown in ten days, I'm pulling the pin and moving on. This is what I've had to do with my offer to host winning screenshots on the Screenshot of the Week thread. After three weeks and a number of attempts to motivate people, I've had two people from the hundreds of winners take up the offer. I can't afford the server space, the software or hours and hours of my time to host two or three photos. Same goes with the routes - no interest and the offer will vanish.
 
I wouldn't worry about hosting, the example is fine like a layout directory similar to the locomotvie catalog. Sometimes routes get forgotten. Might be nice to add which version of Trainz it was made for and if it is known to run on others especially with TS2009 Compatibility and Native modes. And possibly if they have a thread somewhere on it a link to that.
 
Well I've only just started building this route (after practising with a couple of small ones to get the hang of how it all works), so it's going to be quite a bit longer than 10 days before it's ready. :o
 
Storknest I'm not sure what you mean here. Any chance you can elaborate as I'm always open to suggestions:

Blackwatch I'm not asking you to get a move on, there are dozens of route builders out there with completed routes. It's up to them to get the ball rolling. Unfortunately most of the balls around here seem to be square and glued to the ground.
 
Johnk I have a couple of routes built in 06 and need some work to be ready for 09. If you are interested, tell me what I have to do to get them to you and I,ll tidy them up.PS my routes are always small(under 10 grids) if space is a criteria.

bazz6. It sounds like you want me to host the routes also. That isn't a problem, however I'm not trying to take over from Trainz or the DLS. This is an opportunity for route builders to showcase their work if they don't own a website, or promote it if they do. I was expecting the routes to be available on the DLS but lets talk. Can you use the Email form in my first post? That way I can email you with a "form letter" telling you what I need.

Provided the route works for one version that's fine. You can always add other versions as it's converted to work with them. Ta

SuperFudd By this, do you mean a layout as in a MR layout? There are several routes designed like MR layouts and some are very good indeed. Some people also prefer this kind of route.

All I ask from anyone taking up the offer is to make sure the route is completed or functional so that people downloading it can actually use it.

Missed the typo.

I meant a version of this but for layouts/routes (thought you knew about it) http://trainz.banal.net/catalog/catalog.html
Not saying you have to change anything, just that you seem to be doing a similar idea.
There are plenty of fine routes that get lost or ignored for various reasons, even the sticky thread gets missed and doesn't have them all.
 
Hi Storknest. I'm still a little confused.

I was indeed aware of OBO's Locomotive site, in fact it was my 25th listing in the catalog. The site was actually listed on the 30th November last year.

It's this sentence that confuses me:

Unless I'm missing something, Obo's catalogue lists locomotives and nothing else. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

On the other hand, the Trainz Resources Directory doesn't list locomotives or any other assets, so I believe Obo's site and mine are completely complimentary, rather than conflicting.

If I'm wrong and Obo, or any other Trainz site for that matter, lists available routes. I'll immediately drop my plan and promote their site instead.

Firstly, I wasn't even aware there was a Sticky Thread. I'll look it up.

When it comes to indexing or cataloging, these forums are useless. Take the Screenshot of the Week section for example. Past winning entries just disappear into a black hole. I offered to fix this by hosting the winning screenshots for as far back as you like in cronological order, but only two people from the hundreds of winners contacted me.

I'm now offering to do the same with route builders and so-far I'm having similar success. It too looks like this will be aanother project destined to die before it even starts.

Finally, it was never my intention to host routes for downloading. Although I will consider this, the offer was to create a showcase web page for those route builders who don't have sites of their own, or to list and promote those that do. Obviously not too many people are excited about that.

Obo did locomotives, you're doing layouts instead.
That's what I meant.
I believe it is a good idea and should not be scrapped even if you don't get an initial response you want. Its only been a day now. Keep going just do a little at a time at your own pace. Whenever you want to update the site, try looking for one or two routes and contacting the route builder. A real good idea would be to look for routes still available that only use Builtin content, with how many time people download routes and are missing things, a route with Builtin dependencies may not look stunning but everything will be there!

Try contacting the guy of this site http://www.outlimz.com/trainz.html his email is in the listing for the "Monacco & Venezia" Railroad. Never spoke to him but the routes are still there and most have no custom content.
