Reskinning with GIMP

I'm fairly new at reskinning to start this off. But I'm able to get to the item, paint, change numbers and what not. But when I try to open it in the game, everywhere I painted has turned the whole area white. I view the errors and it says that the texture couldn't be loaded. Ummm... help?

Did you change the name or size of the file? If so, that's your problem.

So do I, but sometimes they don't commit for some reason. If it committed, then the little tool icon beside the asset will be ghosted out. If the icon is bold, then it needs to be committed. Check your 'open for edit' tab. If it shows up there, it needs to be committed.

The white texture is definitely an indication of a texture problem. I've seen this problem most of the time when the texture is improperly sized. Also, whn you saved the file, did you compress the file. Files have to be saved as uncompressed files.

Ok. I'll try that. Like I mentioned, I'm new at this and hope I don't annoy you with this one... but, how do you compress it? :udrool:

You don't want to compress it. I don't know what image program that you're using, but it should have a 'settings' function somewhere that you can select whether saved images are compressed or not. You DO NOT want to compress the file when you save it.

Ok. When I click out of GIMP it asks something like... oh crap, I forgot what it says. I'm new at this and learning lol. But it gives me a couple options. Let me check.

You want to make sure when saving as GIMP that there will be a little check box saying do you want to compress the image. Make sure this is uncheck. The image isnt loading is because you have compressed it which means it cant be read.

make sure when you save the file it always overwrite the previous one
and always save as same format
bcz i use photoshop and if i dont merge layrs it always save file as psd format instead of tga format

I don't see any box asking me that. I've noticed that the file size is changing while I'm working. I'm not sure where the box is that you talking about. I'll try it again.

How do I make sure it does this?

Warning: Texture 'mesh_body/specgrey.texture' is missing or could not be loaded for mesh 'content hgxuxthe299\mesh_body\mesh_body.im'. Make sure the file is present in the working directory.

Error: The texture 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Auran\TRS2006/local/content hgxuxthe299/mesh_body/Nose.tga' failed to load.

Perhaps I can be of assistance. I use Gimp, and I've done some texturing.

One thing that might have happened, if you were not careful, is that you may have saved your work from GIMP in native GIMP format, which has the file extension, ~.xcf. I find it useful to always use "save as" instead of "save", as this always brings up the dialog box, and lets me verify the file format (as indicated by the file extension), and the file name. And if saving as a ~.tga file, after the save indication, there is another dialog box asking whether the file should be compressed. In this box, the selection box besides "BLE compression" should NOT be checked.

Another issue, if you change the size of the image file, you may have changed it to a size that Trainz does not permit. In Trainz, the image sizes are a power of 2, that is the dimensions of both sides are 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, or 2048. While you can save rectangular images, e.g. 64 wide by 512 high, you want the image as close to square as possible. So 64 x 512 is to be preferred over 16 x 1024. I have read, but cannot personally confirm, that the shorter dimension of a rectanlge should be less than the sixth higher value in the above sequence, so that 2 x 64 would work, but 2 x 512 would not.

The error message you posted,

C:\Program Files (x86)\Auran\TRS2006/local/content hgxuxthe299/mesh_body/Nose.tga

might result if you erased the "Nose.tga" file, if it is compressed, or if it is no longer the proper proportions.

Do you mean the dimensions of the sides of the texture are changing. If so, this will cause you problems. The final size of the image needs to be the same size as the original. eg. if the sides of the original was 256 pixels x 256 pixels, your new image must be 256 x 256.

HuGe HeLp!!! Thank you! I understand everything you just typed :) Guess I'm learning!! If the file size changes does that mess anything up? Cuz when it first starts the file size is 4.5 mb but when I paint the logo, and change the numbers, it up to 8.0 mb. (Trying to reskin and ES44AC to ES44DC #7695 special paint job)
