Reading & Northern 2012. Large pictures + videos

Roon

This looks great, but I'm aftaid it will be a frame killer on my PC. I have two questions if you would be so kind as to answer.

1. Whose trees are you using?

2. What happened to the original Reading and Northern? I had it, lost it all on a disc crash and would like to have it again. Any possibilities?

They are Pofig's trees: http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=77906

The route actually runs quite well on my older Core2Duo system. I use intelligent placement of objects and details to maximize the routes look and performance. Details exist only near the track or in places they can be seen from a train. More details exist in locations of lower train speeds, and less where train speeds should be higher. Also, for distance forests i use a very frame-friendly spline.

To answer your second question, it appears the original R&N went to route heaven when the old USLW site was redone. I don't know if it would be possible to rehost it/redistribute it at some point.

Now, time for screenshots!

These are very much work-in-progress. Everything visible in the first couple shots was completely blank this morning, and obviously i'm not done yet :). Reading Anthracite, Girardville, PA on the Shenandoah Running Track, and a couple freeware 38's from Jointed Rail.

Had several people asking me how large the route was becoming lately, so i not only tried to guess (roughly 60 miles of track), but i decided to take and post a screenshot that shows everything thats in at the moment.

The original R&N route for TRS2004/06 consisted of the section running north/south up the middle of the picture.

95% done with the new Shenandoah Running Track.

Mahanoy Plane, PA (Google it ;)):

Diverging onto the new Shenandoah Running Track, on its way to the Reading Anthracite loadout.

Man this route is looking amazing! Cant wait till its finished!
Almost done! ;)
...as long as i don't keep adding things or extending lines.

This is what the Mahanoy Plane area looked like 2 days ago.

Now heres a couple more:

Powder Mill Road crossing.

At Reading Anthracite, Girardville.

Few years ago i really enjoyed R&N phase 1. And i'm sure i will be enjoying 2012 version too. Great scenic route with good operating potential. Keep up good work.

Mahanoy City. The stairs to the left used to lead to the passenger station.

I'm currently finding and adding details to the area here.

Discovered black Reading F's aren't very photogenic :P

It's been quite a while since i uploaded anything. I've been quite busy on the route. The Mahanoy & Shamokin Branch is about 2 days from being done :).

Here are a few of my latest:

Reading T-1 crossing the bridge on the eastern end of Mahanoy City.

First shots of Gilberton, PA, another small village that was devoted to the mining of Athracite.

Today the villages population is only a fraction of what it was during the heyday of coal mining. Many of the homes are gone and the lots are vacant, others are in various states of decay (which is a bit interesting trying to capture in Trainz....my towns always end up looking nicer than they should :P).

Lots of old homes and trailers out this way.

Anyway, my huge 4 day weekend continues. I may get a short video out before i have to go back to work next Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed.

Excellent Work!!... I worked for the reading and northern or Reading Northern and Blue Mountain Railroad for a few years Just the way i remember it!!

One of the best routes I've seen, and glad to see those A&BR SD9's getting some use!
I love those locos. They really fit the gritty/non-flashy atmosphere of the locale.

And, my computer is getting pretty old actually.

Core2Duo E7200
4 Gigs DDR2 RAM
Radeon 6870
Trainz on an SSD (best thing ever for Trainz...you can literally fly around routes as fast as possible and NO stuttering.)

The route normally runs at about 30 FPS. Its higher when i start out and gradually slows down into the lower 20's if i've been pushing it hard for a few hours. Taking FRAPS videos has started pushing it down to about 20 FPS (while recording at full resolution) with a large train on screen. I'm pretty confident the route will run quite well for everyone, even though i'm quite happy to push the limits. This version of the route with Pofigs trees and high detail track, textures, and buildings runs just as well as the old version did while running in compatibility mode in TRS2010.

Here's some additional A&BR loco shots, from an aborted video attempt.

Ahhh the yard at Port Clinton PA... Love the Pics man Great work!!

Thanks! Port Clinton should be getting an overhaul soon (and New Ringgold is going to get completely rebuilt) to bring it up to current standards.

Anyway, new video! :) I slowed things down some this time.

..and a couple screenshots from the video.

That should pretty much conclude this area of the route for now. I plan on heading back east and working on the area around Lake Hauto on the old Central of New Jersey (along with random spot upgrades all over the route).

The thing is i don't have a supercomputer. Its actually quite dated...and old Core 2 Duo and ancient DDR2 RAM. Both severely bottleneck my Radeon 6870, but i'm waiting a couple more months for Ivy Bridge to upgrade.

Its more about intelligent placement of details to in a sense trick the eye. I'm a student of the design of the Disney themeparks. I've studied and copied many of the techniques they use in constructing their parks to hopefully achieve something better than would be thought possible with given resources.

that may be true
but my computer doesnt like routes with alot of details that are over about 10 base boards
sad but it is true
my computer sucks
