Hi Steve,

Your not running your game "de-Steamed", if you are only running it in offline mode. That is not what it means, it is actually detaching RW2 from Steam completely. The whole point of a de-Steamed copy of RW2 is that you have complete control over what you want installed. No auto updates wiping out your third party sound sets etc.

cheers,
Mike.

I appreciate your help Mike, sorry, but, the text I've highlighted is what I don't understand, if RS.com's creations (routes, locomotives, etc,) can only be obtained by purchasing them through Steam, how can we do this, if we have 'de-steamed' our game??

I'm just miffed that we cannot install the core game and our Payware add-ons without utilising the Steam/Valve activation process in the first instance, just like we could do with our old games, which, quite frankly if we had known about from day 1, may have possibly put a lot of folks off from purchasing the game, hindsight is a wonderful thing, naievity at it's best, no doubt.

I agreed with RRsignal who asked - What about the customer's right to protect their investment and be able to use the software they paid for? Why should we be at the mercy of activation servers that may or may not be there in a couple of years?

Because we all now live in a scaremongering society, oh sorry, a scaremongering CAPITALIST society, whereby we are regulated by companies who think they need to protect their investments at all costs at the mercy of honest folks, without our agreement.
And I could cynically add that it may only be a matter of time before N3V and Railworks start charging customers for the privilege of playing on their respective Multiplayer functions, on a hourly/daily basis, just like will happen on other PC games such as Call of Duty, FIFA12, etc, etc. Read the internet, it won't be long before this becomes the norm in future.

Cheerz. ex.

Hi everybody
Good one there pfx. Perhaps if you are bored you could attend this conference on my behalf as it is guaranteed to cure all boredom no matter how extreme. Email text follows:-

Dear Colleagues
Unfortunately, one of our delegates is unable to attend the Hazards Conference which is due to take place 2 - 4th September at Keele University, Stoke on Trent.

As this has now been bought and paid for, can you or someone from your region you know with same qualifications be prepared to attend in her place?

Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help.

Regards
Gill

I am confirming your hotel accommodation now pfx, just sit back and enjoy.

Bill
NB:-I think the email has been sent to me by mistake, but seeing as the invite is there why not?

Hi Everybody.
What the hell idiot teenagers causing mayhem in ENGLISH towns and cities ( we have more respect for ourselves and our country here ). Has to do with software piracy i will never know. Bury your head in the sand as much as you like, as fast as the software companies invent new ways of protecting their wares. Pirate groups crack them in days, weeks at the most.
IKB.

so what do you suggest IKB that all the software producers just allow their products to be stolen, which will lead eventually to all the employees being unemployed and us users left with a much reduced software market in new products.

Whether it's stealing on the streets from the high street stores or stealing at home while on your computer both are still stealing and in doing that damaging others.

I feel that some on this forum will not be happy until we are unable to debate whether the latest versions of Trainz or Railworks has advantages over the other because there are no new versions of either simulator. that day will come about when Railworks and NV3 find it is just not worth their while to produce new versions due to wholesale piracy.

Ikb there is nothing wrong with producing anything that people require for a reasonable profit. Working for myself that is what I do and it is what keeps me going and my new colleague off of state benefits. Therefore that profit should not be taken away illegally by anyone no matter what arguments they have or axe to grind.

Unfortunately you do seem to get very hot under the collar so quickly and not so slow about throwing stones either!

Hi Everybody.
Been working in the office all day but thought I would look in on Railworks and noticed that the release date for Railworks3 has been announced as 23rd September.

I think the challenge now will be to keep this thread going otherwise I believe that any number of threads could startup on the forum around that date. Could be quite a job for the mods

Anyway, in anticipation I have just purchased the class 156 DMU (still to be tested) and I am now in the process of oiling all the windscreen wiper bearings on my existing locomotives. (Anticipating great use)

The RSC/Oovee 156 is very good, probably one of the best add-ons to date albeit apparently relies on a lot of custom scripting.

Your concern for the mods is heartwarming. But never fear - I'm sure you will manage to keep the thread open, all by yourself..........

Well we have had so many threads one after anther about the competition on here until they peter out then someone raises RW again!

Hi Stovepipe, rjhowie and Everybody.
Your concern for the mods is heartwarming. But never fear - I'm sure you will manage to keep the thread open, all by yourself..........

stovepipe, sorry for the delay in replying (start of the premiership football season today as far as man Man U where concerned) but I always reply to anyone who addresses my postings as it shows respect and good standards.

As far as this thread is concerned, I believe it has been a very good debate covering the differences and benefits that one simulator has over the other. It has also addressed such matters as the simulators being offered through steam, the problems of piracy and privacy when it comes to our own computers.

I only mentioned keeping this thread going as (and in full agreement with rjhowie) that a new Railworks comparison thread seems to startup every time that a similar thread drops out. Judging by the number of threads which started when Rail Simulator announced that Railworks 3 was to be released, it would seem to me that it would be better if everything was concentrated into this thread when the release is made rather than having another three or four threads start again all over the forum.

Speaking for myself I would like to thank the moderators and NV3 for allowing the debate to be had on this forum, and appreciate that as the Trainz management team has stated they like to hear the views on the competition they face.

As for me keeping this thread going on my own and the number of postings I have made, well as stated I am always willing to reply and debate with anyone who feels they wish to debate with me. After all, I use speech to text software so it only takes me no more than 2 to 3 minutes on average to place my postings on the forum.

On the football forum today there are quite a number of us at use speech to text software, and we where rattling off the postings and replies to one another quicker than the mods could check them as they have to be on the forum before posting.

Great day, and great game was the general view, but I still like to come back at the end of the day to the peace and quiet of the Trainz forum.

Although I may not be personally enamoured about constant threads about something that isn't Trainz on a Trainz Forum (!), I can go along with that feeling quite happily of allowing this one to go on if that keeps some happy. That is the lesser than constant re-births. I will of course gentlemanly bow out the discussion, ignore it and get on with my Trainz!!

How many Trainzers have Railworks ?

The NEC and the Horseshoe routes are being released on Railworks

I don't even know where to purchase Railworks, asside from on Steam ... who I will not do business with.

I hear that Railworks is very user unfriendly, and creating routes is next to rediculous.

I do not know whether one can easily modify a Railworks route, to correct scenes that are wrong.

I noticed that alot of the screenshots of the Horseshoe route are vastly wrong.

Ordering a Railworks DVD seems unknown, how to do so.

At least with Trainz ordering a TS10/TS12 disc is easy, and modifying a route, or creating a route is easy, over Railworks.

Has anyone downloaded the Railworks NEC, and especially the Horseshoe route ?

There are a lot of places to buy RW3 aside from steam I just don't know and they are user friendly I've been over there a couple of times. Plus route building is being improved in the 3rd game as well as AI Drivers, and multiplayer will also be installed. Plus they don't have missing dependencies and constant script error issues like Trainz and all the files you need to run the asset is right in the package when you download it. If you compare RW3 to MSTS route building I'm damn sure you'd pick RW3. Trust me it's not as hard some people say.

Couple links;

Opinions vary, but personally I found the Railworks world editor much easier than Trainz surveyor to create and modify routes in. The reason I'm here is because Railworks is essentially like building a beautiful highly detailed model railroad with no command control or block wiring, running more than one train at a time is ridiculously complicated to set up and falls apart if you sneeze on it. Railworks signals and AI traffic trains are completely hopeless for what I want to do.

The really bad news;

You can order the DVD version dirt cheap - but. "asside from on Steam ... who I will not do business with."

Buy the DVD version of Railworks, install, set up a STEAM account to activate it. The STEAM client must be installed on your computer since Railworks will not launch without the STEAM loader. If you don't want to do business with STEAM then you can't use Railworks regardless of where you buy it or how you install it. There is no non STEAM version of Railworks.

Also, CR, you will have to deal with Steam periodically, not just once to activate; there are no legal circumventions. Somebody did present a workaround here a month or two ago, but it's only temporary, and requires a fair amount of file manipulation. And, if the Steam folks have been paying even the slightest bit of attention, even that workaround should have been patched by now.

I am hoping that someone who does have Railworks will give up a heads up on just how good this route is, and post screenshots, or videos on YouTube.

I seriously doubt that I will switch to Railworks ... and it is more likely that I will upgrade to TS10, or TS13 ... and continure on with my route in Trainz.
