Your not the only one that's been trying to get that point across. It seams that a vast majority want to deny it. So the built in content looks a little better. Woopdidoo. I've seen outstanding third party content for both MSTS and Trainz. I haven't seen any for RS but I'm sure there is some on the way if it's not available already. The whole point is good content creators can make any of the sims look good. The only thing is what aspect of the sim are you after compared to the abilities of each of the sims. I think were wasting our time trying to discus this. And all these non Trainz threads popping up all over are starting to get annoying.

Bill

Considering that you think it is a waste of time this sure seems to be a popular subject ( 299 posts - 15250 views ).

300 posts? :p

Why are you trying to dis RS?

Trainz = Railroad Simulator

KRS = Rail Simulator

Both have pros and cons.

STOP BICKERING :o

The UK version is only available in Windows Vista according to amazon.co.uk, so I cannot purchase it even if I wanted to. The American version you can get in Windows XP, but nobody will ship to the UK. Seems as though they don't want us play this sim game, oh well, back to our good old Trainz......:hehe:
The other thing that caught my eye, is the heavily detailed locomotives and rolling stock. If loco's are going to be say 35mb EACH, you won't be able to have too many of them running around your route, for fear of low fps.

Cheerz. ex. :wave:

Ex -

If you care to look at the technical blurb on the Kuju RS site you'll see that the supported platforms are XP and Vista.

It's also worth pointing out that, in this case, it doesn't really matter how heavilly detailed the locos are so long as the graphics engine is good enough to move them around quickly enough.

If you read some of the stuff people are posting - instead of simply defaulting to your natural "hammer KRS at all costs mode" - you'll notice that some have reported that the FPS of Rail Sim is actually pretty impressive. Far better, in fact, than TRS.

A layout I am working on....

traffic.jpg

If you notice the traffic, vehicles actually have headlights at night. Also they are on the road unlike TRS which has its traffic floating in the air above the road. I know there are pros and cons with each simulator but for my money I think KRS has done a better job. First off laying track is a lot better and your junctions look like real junctions. I know TRS has a junction kit which does the same, but KRS does it automatically. And yes framerates are better in KRS even with all settings at max. I will still have TRS on my system but will not use it as much as I did before I got KRS.

The thing is, all these programs feature game engines that are platforms to produce anything you want. It doesn't matter if its MSTS/KRS/AT, it doesn't matter about your graphics capabilities, it would look virtually the same in all other programs.

While I certainly agree a lot is at the hands of the artist, it is a drastic oversimplification to say that you can produce anything you want. Each engine has technical limitations and features the artist can be hindered by or be helped by. Visually the Railsim engine has some features such as procedurally generated shadows, better bump maps and newish (V3) shaders that just aren't currently available on Trainz. People do have a point when they talk about the visual quality of RS being better, those new features will make content designed for them look better in an apples to apples content compairison.

Geez guys will you stop arguing over which sim is best!
This is almost as worst as the GE v.s EMD dispute!

For every man/woman there is a sim that meets their desires more so than others. Different people like different things.

On the contrary. I think this discussion is just what the community needs. It's nothing if not cathartic!

It's only when you start to flesh-out the pros and cons of other products, like KRS, that you begin to realise how and why we can (and must) make TRS better.

There's no doubt that Rail Sim has raised the bar in a couple of areas. We, as the TRS community, can either acknowledge and appreciate what Kuju have done and then try to take our own sim forward, or (as some may prefer) we can bury our heads in the sand and hope it will all go away.

If we do that the only things that will go away are members of this community.

Just one question, Compudoc: What the hell are you still doing here?

Best wishes,

:(

Coerni .. perhaps the question should be > can the average trainzer do what you can do .. Answer = No .

Most of the guys posting in this thread do not have your abilities , and are looking at what they get in the box .

BN
You are right that most Trainzers don't have those abilities, but the point is that Trainz can support this.

A fact that Auran also know . Many suggestions have been made in the past to include more plugin scripts to allow users without the abilities of coerni and the handful of other talented scripters to access some of the many features available .... How many of those scripts do you see included in any release of Trainz ???

TRS2006 included lots of unencrypted scripts by myself and Bloodnok (and others). If you are hoping to able to use scripts without knowing anything about scripting you'll be out of luck.

The TRS2006 scripts included Bluestar couplers and pipes, AWS support, support for animated brake gear including the handling of flyshunting, texture swapping, random numbering, pfx when unloading, working water fillers for tenders, marker lights for diesel locos, headcode lamps for steam locos, and examples of how to pass messages between the locos and attached meshes. And that's just the Rail-sim stuff off the top of my head.
