"What has Trainz go to do with it?" Well, this is the Trainz website.I presume that by starting a thread showing "Rail Simulator" screenies (as with the MSTS2 thread) you're intending to show us how good the new simulator is? I"m saying that the shots look as good as Trainz (except that in the real world plants don"t grow under bridges). However, if you already own Trainz there is little point in shelling out hard earned cash on a "New" simulator if all that simulator does is to produce a simulation as good as Trainz, which has 92000 + Assets - how many does this one have?...:o

What you have to bear in mind is the number of third-party assets that Trainz had when it first came out... none. Every sim has to start somewhere and I dare say Rail Simulator has started off very well indeed. It's only been out a couple of months and there are new assets being uploaded to UKTS every day, with many more in development. Having a quick look at my download counts I can see that my reskins alone have been downloaded over 2000 times since I uploaded my first one on December 11th. Many users are just getting to grips with converting their models to RS from TRS or MSTS, and once that happens there is going to be an explosion of re-released and upgraded stock for RS, so I would say the future looks bright. I bought RS on impulse just to try it out and it gives TRS a VERY good run for its money, especially when you consider the support that RSDL (ex-Kuju) are putting behind it by releasing additional content on a regular basis, and already working on a patch to fix a few issues. I won't even try to compare it to MSTS as that's not something which can be done IMO since the two are in completely different leagues.

Anyway, a couple from me :)

These look terrific, I can't wait for the US release later this month :). I'm going to have to come back here and see where all these great UK trains come from!

@lewisner

I owned MSTS before Trainz came out way back in 2000, 2001 (whenever). Somebody back then probably said the same thing you did: MSTS is good, whats the point of another simulator... The point of another simulator is "competition." Without another product out there, things become stale and innovation isn't regarded very highly. Now if Rail Simulator gains momentum (which it seems like), TRS will need to improve, and thats a win for everybody. Yes there is a point to buy a new simulator, when you own another one... Trainz doesn't spell Rail Simulator, unless my eyes are deceiving me :hehe:

If you don't want to spend money on RS, thats fine, your choice! :)

No USA Content?

If Rail Simulator is strictly European Passager content than I am not interested. I don't see any USA content at all. Hopefully that will change with the release of the USA verision. I like lots of industrial content. Until then TRS2004 is fine with me.:p

Every sim has to start somewhere
Thats true, but the last time I contacted this organisation re creating third party items for their simulator, their marketing group informed me that it's not looking at receiving third party items.

Their policy on third party objects is very different to that of Auran. I think you will find that third party input will be limited to third party sites and that there will not be anything remotely like the DLS. So unless there has been a change in thinking, It will take a long time for it to have the same level of centralised third party support/input.

As another contributor stated, there is nothing posted here yet, which makes it superior to trainz.

cheers

Coming back to support my earlier point I notice no one is posting pictures of the S&DJR, or metioning it, I am not directly having a go at the sim or anyone but am intreasted to know if anyone else agrees with me about the poor representation of the line.

Well, that does it for me then. That is not the sort of attitude that wins support. I've sort of been up in the air about purchasing Railsim, but after reading that, I'll keep away from it.

I see Auran has nothing to fear from Kuju since that is their policy.

Question for people who own Kuju's Rail Simulator

Can anyone tell me if the shadows under the railcars (circled in red on picture) are created by the game (for example, the shadows form and bend to the shape of the track), or are simple planes with a shadow texture over them?

ICE, very nice shots :) I too would be interested in that locomotive if you release / have released it

I agree with crcman, there's nothing wrong with something fresh being introduced to the market, and with the TC series getting a very mixed response and MSTSX / 2 looking like it has a lot of convincing to do, RS is in a very good position and will only lead to the improvement of other sims. It contains a lot of features which would make a world of difference to TRS if they were introduced. RS is innovative, and some of the tools in the editor like the offset tool and the signal linking tools are things which we would either never have imagined, or which are sorely needed in TRS. Turn up the competition, I say!

I am hardly a big fan of MSTS, but that didn't have its own DLS and it's not exactly suffered from it! RSDL have already released a number of additional items and are fully supportive of third party content, it's just that it seems they want to spend their budget on development rather than on a hosting service. There are already a number of very large, very popular download databases in place such as train-sim.com and uktrainsim.com, so there is much less need for a DLS-style system than there was when Trainz first started. I don't see this as a problem and there are already people investigating the possibility of a Trainzobjectz-style application to download missing dependencies from the various websites. I think people realise that to make a sim enjoyable you need to remove the hours of (often fruitless) searching which was synonymous with downloading - for example - MSTS activities.

The US version will feature US content, it would be pointless having a separate version otherwise :p It will include the Cajon Pass route (replacing the Newcastle-York route from the EU version, which will still be obtainable however) and the currently announced stock includes the GE ES44AC and EMD SD40-2, along with boxcars and seemingly lots of freight-related content.

Just for LNER I loaded up RS on max settings and took a few shots of Bath. I think the reason it's featured so little in screenshots is that firstly it's up against the much busier and much more (currently) famous ECML and GWML, and secondly the built-in scenarios leave a lot to be desired as they don't do any of the routes justice. There's not really anything worth taking screenshots of. For example I played one last night in which you run a stopping service (Class 166) from Slough to Paddington and back again, and whilst it's very enjoyable and fairly challenging, the only traffic on the first leg of the journey is two other Class 166s. That's not right for a section of railway line which is among the busiest in the UK. It's just as well the editor is very easy to use and you can make nice busy scenarios with plenty of reds and yellows!

Anyway, screenshots!

The reason why i bought this game is becasue i buy all rail sim games from the very first game for the Commodore 64 to Rail simulator.

One thing that is very good about Rail Simulator is that there is a new drive engine. I want to be able to build realistic routes in this current day.
That ussally means in this current day that i need houses and more houses buildings everywere and i want a high framerate evan with the whole baseboard coverd.
Thats what i just could not with trs.If i used the best tracks in TRS from Bloodnok yea just the tracks would take the framerate to 20 25 fps evan on the computer i have wich means theres no framerate for houses :o.

Jb you still running RS wirth out a graphics card?
Bet you couldnt do that with Trainz

Haha yep still using onboard graphics which is why my shots are a bit grainy and blurred, my beloved nForce 405 chip doesn't do antialiasing or anisotropic filtering :hehe: For screenshots I bump the resolution up to 1280x1024 and put all sliders on max, which currently gives me a framerate in single figures (usually under 5fps)

Normally I run it at 800x640 with settings on low / average and get about 15-20fps which is fine, but as you say I can only ever dream of doing that with TRS. Getting an Nvidia 8 series in the next few weeks hopefully though!

Though I don't have much liking for the game (needs work out of all honesty), it is nice to see Auran is showing some flexibility, they allow users to post screenies from a competing sim. I can't name many other companies that would allow this.
