Question about modified assets

Although I've run Trainz on and off for several years, I've never uploaded a route. Here's my question:

If I modified an asset from the DLS and upload a route that uses the asset, does the modified asset get uploaded? I'm thinking "No" but thought I'd ask the experts!

Thanks.

Answer is no.

Note:
If the assets you edited is originally on the DLS and the only reason you edited it is because it was broken and you made it work again, you could consider contacting the CRG and see if they can upload the fixed asset for you.

Thanks. That's what I figured. I've edited a few things like removing the sound from a station. Nothing important.

A slight complication! Have you (a) simply modified the station by removing the sound, or have you (b) cloned it and modified the clone?

If (a), no problem as anyone downloading your route will just get the original.

If (b), then you will need to upload the modified clone, and that leads to problems with copyright and plaguarism...

It is an interesting and slightly murky area. Frequent advice given if people are having an issue or an asset is faulty is to edit it (often just remove or correct a line in the config). However this will not change the original item on the DLS or users' installs so they will still have the original error, might even prevent the route from functioning. If you clone the item it will attract your KUID so could be uploaded as a new item but then we are into copyright issues, with all the can of worms that entails.

A good example would be the TUME flexy tunnel track which is one of the few tunnel sections with track and wall/roof section built in. However the track is looking rather dated and a version which used one of the more recent Protrack types would be ideal for contemporary routes. Or for that matter, changing the config of traditional tunnel splines so they no longer snap to fixed positions on the terrain. However I would be loath to upload someone elses work with a small change even with full disclosure in the description.

Wow. This is why I brought this up! Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm going to need to go over everything with a fine-tooth comb. Luckily I haven't modified many things. In the case of the station, I don't believe I cloned it, but I will certainly check. I don't plan on uploading modified assets, but I'll need to ensure I'm using the items with the original KUIDs. I also discovered some payware grass splines that I'll need to remove. I can see that I'll need to use more care when working on the route.

Thanks again for helping me understand!

Dave

I suggest you go into Manage Content, list the dependencies of the route and check if any of them are yours. If any of them are, check if that was intentional (a self created asset) or not (a clone of someone else). That should make your search relatively quick.

One of the problems Dave is that it is virtually impossible to exclude an item from Surveyor once its live on your install. I have the payware Mosti Russian route and S&C active in my Trainz but there is no warning or colour code applied to any of the assets to identify as coming from payware. The added complication with Mosti is that some of the assets are on the DLS in an older form from when the route was default content in TS12, so the route might grab those but they are obsolete in TANE with no means to get the correct version without buying the DLC.

That is why the description on all my routes now states, "May contain assets from xyz payware route(s) with the onus being on the downloader to check or not bother with my work as they see fit. (Or buy the dependent route and offer a little extra revenue to the provider).

I can't remember whether it is for older versions but for T:ANE it should be possible (at least for N3V DLC content) to apply a Payware=False filter using the content filter tool in Surveyor although this may also filter out Deluxe items as well. I don't think it's possible to do that with third-party payware though.

You can disable assets in Manage Content. That way they will not show up in your route list in game or in Surveyor. The assets (to my knowledge) keep working in routes that ask for them, but are no longer listed. Great way to reduce those long lists when you have no plans to use the content.

You are reading my mind! I was about to ask for advice because I noticed I have some JR payware stuff that's crept in from their awesome Coal Country route. Too bad there is no way to easily know when you are using a payware asset. Some things I could do a bulk replace on, some wouldn't be so easy.

Thanks.

If they are from 3rd party websites, they will be flagged "locally modified". A lot of the payware from N3V is flagged payware. Those together should get you a long way.

Yes but you still have to know it is from the payware pack, which is why some sort of colour coding would help. *Then* you can exclude it.

The easy way is just to have a separate install (or in T:ANE a separate database) that only has your route and stuff from the DLS. No danger that PayWare or third party stuff will get used that way.

What I have done is install the game in a new location. Save what I want to upload to a CDP then install it in to the new installation. This will give you the assets that are used but not available to others that just has the bare game. Some of the assets that come with the game are listed as payware.
