Is it correct that the TS10 patches take them to a higher build number than the TS12 patch? If so, is it significant? Should I (or anyone) be bothered ?

Yes because all fixes improve that virsion of that game.

I noticed that but thought nothing of it, I've got the patch on my desktop ready to go but am waiting to see if it works or otherwise. Very sceptical am I.

I applied both patches with no apparent problems. Each took less than 10 minutes. The TS12 database did a rebuild after the patch which took another 20 minutes.

I applied the TS2010 patch and have not experienced any problems since - yet.
Don't forget to turn off anti-virus and run the .exe as administrator - to be sure, to be sure...
