The diagram is good, but I can't really make out what you mean with above sentence.

I see the QR signals are practically the same as the British 2/3/4-aspect ones. In that case I would suggest downloading Bloodnok's signal pack. They're basically the same type of signals, yet they have far greater functionality. It comes with markers that you can use to customize the theater signalling on top of the 2/3/4-aspect signals. Also comes with a trackmarker that makes the signal show red/stop (and makes AI trains stop too), which can be very useful. ;)

AI Direction management

My suggestion is a prolific use of the direction markers. While time consuming to place lots of them, it can solve some of those issues with the AI. I use them primarily to to ensure the correct direction on parallel tracks so that the trains ruining in opposite directions run on opposite tracks. from my understanding that is about what you are trying to do, you just have six parallel tracks instead of two.

the train has used the freight up closest to the bottom. it then goes into a siding, loads the wagons, takes the loco off and puts it at the back of the train ready to go back on the down line. i need the train to cross both up lines to get to the down line.

is that any clearer?

Yeps, in that case using direction markers would do the trick alright, like TSwenson suggested. An AI controlled train will avoid driving through a direction marker that is pointed towards it. Any bi-directional tracks should not have any direction markers also. :)

Direction markers might do the trick but not always. The drive via trackmark command could be better.
