Problem with Win XP Need advice

Howdy all,
Ol Mac here and got a problem with Trainz. So without further adue, here's my story. I bought Trainz 2010 EE from fleabay. Downloaded it and it's working fine on my Win 7 PC. Ok so I go along and buy Trainz 2004 and downloaded it on my xp pc and works fine. So now I want to load the 2010 version on xp and it won't even recognize the disc. When I insert the disc, it keeps telling me to insert a disc. Now on the 2010 case it states it's for xp and up. Any other disc, works fine, so there's nothing wrong with the cd rom.

Ok so my next trick is, doing a copy from the win 7 hard drive to the xp hard drive and it will not let me in and run it. So I dumped it. Then I had a problem with 2004 on my xp and uninstalled it. Now before I reinstalled it, I tried again to install 2010 and it still don't recognize the disc. Ok to clear things up here about the 2010 disc, there's nothing wrong with it as we tried it on my wife's pc win 7 and it works fine. So now to tie up the bundle so to speak, here's my questions. Knowing that the 2010 disc's don't work for the xp, my next move would be, buy a 2010 download for the xp. Or maybe try a trial download to be safe. Now the big question here is: Can I run more than one Trainz on one computer? Or would there be a collision. All in all, it appears that the xp, doesn't want anything to do with 2010. By the way, both computers are high end jobs, meaning big time video cards and boatloads of memory and so on.
Well that my story and any help on y'alls part would be greatly appriciated.

Doug

I don't know much about TRS2004 but it appears they both will run fine side-by-side. TS2010 runs excellently on XP, though you'll need SP3 to install patches. But, you said you "downloaded" it after buying it on an auction site; if so, it shouldn't be looking for a disc. Who was selling this particular version?

If you bought the disc set rather than a download, it should have come on 2 DVDs. Perhaps your XP machine doesn't have a DVD reader? Just a thought.

Doug,

You wont have any problem running different versions of the game on one PC because each version will install in its own folder. I have 2006 and 2009 both installed here.

This may seem like a daft question but you say that the 2010 disc wont install on the XP computer? 2010 is going to be a DVD disc, does your XP computer have a DVD drive or is it just a CD drive ??

Andy

** Quicker off the mark than me RRSignal but we are both giving the same advice !! LOL

Re: help with XP

Hello Doug,
Just a quick reply regarding the problem, the clue is in the fourth
line of your post in which you say,"my cd rom is ok". Well 2010 is actually on
a DVD and won't work without a DVD rom, that's why it works ok on WIN7.
Hope this helps.

Malc.

Ok here's the deal I didn't mention fellers. The xp is a Gateway, like I said high end pc. The thing is used of course and the cd rom was broken as with the dvd drive. So what I done was install an old cd rom drive from another pc and that works fine. Now going on another venture, I also installed a dvd drive from my wife's old compact and it still won't recognize the disc...2010. So yes, the xp has a dvd setup. Now y'all got me a thinkin, maybe the drivers are outdated for the dvd? Oh and Signal, I can't remember who sold it to me off ebay and yes, there is two disc's. Any other suggestions?

Well, if the discs work on the Win7 machine and not on the XP machine, I have to think it's something with the drive itself. One thing you can try on the XP machine is go into Start->Control Panel->Performance and Mainenance->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager->DVD/CD-Rom devices and right-click and select Uninstall for the DVD-ROM, then reboot. This will force Windows to reinstall the driver for the DVD drive.

A workaround (which I have never tried) might be to copy both DVDs onto a temporary folder on the Win7 machine, and transfer them via thumbdrive to the XP machine and install from there. (If you can set up your network such that you can read files off the Win7 machine, you can just install from that temporary directory.)

There is yet another method if all else fails but try the above.

Thanks Sig. I'm aimin on tryin that. I just printed out what you told me to do. I'll let ya know how I make out. If I can't do it, my wife can LOL.

Some older DVD drives won't read certain format or make of DVD's.

Meanwhile easy way to get Trainz working on your old PC.
Network the two PC's and copy the 2010 setup across, create the shortcuts and you should be good to go, any missing registry entries are created on running the program, so it doesn't actually have to be installed.

I Installed 2010 once and have copied to a backup install and also two two other PC's all work fine, plus saves having to patch and add your local folder.

Ok, so I tried what you said to do Signal and it reads that the disc might be corrupt. The DVD is working fine and the disc works on my wife's computer.

So I'll try what you said there malc and see what happens. I did try to go from hard drive to hard drive and that didn't work either. So I guess I'll just go buy the download. I'm thinking maybe buying Trainz 2009. I've read a bunch of bad problems with 2010. I do say 04 runs perfect but I'm having trouble downloading stuff from the DLS. It says it's all there but I can't find it at all. Then when I go and try to re download, it tells me that it's already there.
This is starting to drive me crazy!!!!! LOL Thanks for all your help feller trainzers.
