problem with surveyor

I can load my TRS 2004 but all of a sudden it has started crashing as soon as I open up any layout in surveyor (even create a new one) and it takes about 90 minutes before it tries to load and crashes.
I think I have a bad file somewhere in my Trainz. I have been trying to find it for 2 weeks.
I have run Trainz Objectz but still have the problem.
It has to be something I downloaded recently in the last month .
Also I have an extremly large amount of downloaded material.
Thanks for any assist.
Bill

I'm getting an error after it crashes. I thought the errors all said the same thing. If not I won't have time until later to try again (after midnight our time EST) because it takes about 45 minutes to get to surveyor and another approx 1 1/2 hrs in surveyor before it crashes. (I'm patient... lol)
I was wondering too if their was a specific download that was bad in the DL. lately to start with. Has to be within the last 3 weeks or so.
Thanks :)

That's taking way too long to load, and can be indicative of low disk space, or some other system problem.

Please list out your system specs along with your free hard drive space, so we can help troubleshoot this problem.

A bad asset can cause the program to crash, but the fact that it takes 45 minutes to do so, says to me there's some other underlying problem.

The drive is an external Seagate with total 465 GB (500GB Drive) and 3.2 GB Free.
I was going to insert a picture of the error but don't know how but I have the info here...

I think the low disk space could be a major issue there - although it depends if it is the main system drive or not.

If it is the system drive (the one with Windows on) you need to free up some space (it may be worth doing so anyway as you will encounter issues when defragmenting the drive as it requires 15% minimum for the defrag.

If it is not the system drive, it may be an issue with your antivirus or (possibly) a faulty piece of content - Trainzobjectz has an option to validate content (unfortunately, I am currently using TRS2006, so I am unable to get the info relating to Trainzobjectz.

It may also be beneficial to know if any particular actions cause it to crash (apart from the time factor).

Thanks Shane.
I will try first to free up some space on the drive. That might be the problem. I will post if it works for sure.
Sorry about the smily face... I haven't got a clue how that happened.
It was surpose to read Flags: 00010206 (CF:0 ZF:0 SF:0) but you probably already knew that.
Thanks again,
Bill

OK, I will wait to see what the result of the cleanup is (Disk Cleanup is a useful tool for this).

To stop certain items changing into faces on the forum posts (per post) you will need to edit in advanced mode, then tick 'Disable smilies in text' (it's under Additional Options, Miscellaneous options)

Another thing that concerns me is the fact that the drive is an external Seagate. There's nothing wrong with Seagate drives, but being an external one concerns me. The external drives tend to overheat, which can mean a very quick death to the drive.

The fact that the program runs for 45 minutes before the crash, is definitely indicative of some kind of system stress such as an overheating drive. As the drive heats up, the device becomes more unstable, and less reliable. Eventually, the drive with crash.

You might want to consider looking into an internal drive if you can afford the investment, and your system is capable of holding it. The worst thing you want to happen is one day you'll power up your computer, and you'll hear "click, click, clunk" when the drive has crashed.

Re: The hexadecimal messages. They really don't mean a lot to us because we're not Auran's development staff. These are the errors thrown up by the program, and Auran's programmers have the debugging tools to determine what the error is.

Again, please post the complete system spec, what brand, how much memory, etc. This will help resolve your problem.

Thanks for the info.
I have moved several gigs to another drive and have 15.7 gb free now.
I found 4 layouts that I had installed by mistake that were TRS 2006 Kuids
and I have removed them.
When I tried to load one of my layouts it opened but everytime I open ones I downloaded from DLS it crashes.
I don't have enough room on my C drive to put the game or I would.
Another thing I thought about was deleting or moving all recent files to the point where it was working.Probably a month or so. I hate to lose all those downloads but may have to to get it to work. What's your thoughts?
Thanks,
Bill

Rebuild your database and see if this helps.

Since you're running TRS2006:

Delete the assets.tdx file from the \Auran\TRS2006 folder, and the Assets.bku, which is found under the cache folder (same path then cache).

Once these are deleted, restart Trainz.
The rebuild process can take some time, so plan on doing somethng else while this process is going on.

When this is done, go back and run the program and see what happens.

What are the other specs of your system. Your C: drive could easily be upgraded. Seagate and Maxtor make upgrade kits that will migrate your installation over to your new larger hard drive, giving you more space on the system, which will inturn operate better overall.

I have copied everything on my external to another external drive and have 50 GB free space.
I am not running TRS2006 although I do have the sim but I am only running TRS2004. I just mistakely downloaded/installed some TRS2006 layouts into TRS2004 and was trying to delete them all out. I didn't know if they would make a difference or not.
I moved all my June/July Kuids to a hold folder. It still does the same thing on the new drive.
I don't know where you are coming from about the database or the assets in the catche folder. Is that TRS2006? I'm sorry that I don't understand how that part works. Could you perhaps explain these to me in layman's terms.
Thanks
Bill

Bill,

I was refering to TRS2006 when it came to the database stuff. Since you are using TRS2004, this is a different animal the way it handles the assets.

Having said this, I highly recommend installing Trainz Objects. This program, made by Terry Franks, is the purcuror to Content Manager. It will allow you see your assets by name instead of as individual files and folders located on your hard drive.

Using TO, you should be able to delete what you don't want, and manage your content better.

Once that's done, use the option in Trainz Objects to delete the Trainz Chump files. This is, more or less similar, the same as doing a database repair in later versions of Trainz.

Good luck, and I think you're moving in the right direction.

John

Quick question.
I'm in Trainz Objects now and there are profiles where there is no maps (layouts).
Could this effect the loading of the surveyor??
I have found 10 so far and I'm just scratching the surface.
If it matters I will either try to find the map or I will delete the profiles.
Thanks
Bill

I was hoping someone could give me an idea how to get back in my game.
I have tried everything I can think of but still can't get it to work and I have a lot of time and effort into the simulation.
If I delete the Dispatcher chump it takes about 60 min. and it has a fatal error (I tried running it 6 times & it comes up 0 in Dispatcher chump) and if I put in the latest chump file that has a number to it it goes to surveyor but when I click any layout it takes an additional 1 1/2 hrs and then goes to error again.
This all started back around the 20th or so of June.
Could there be a corrupt file about that time that I can't find in the game? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thankz,
Bill
:(

Bill,

At this point, I hate to say it, but it sounds like something is corrupt. You might have to reinstall TRS2004 plus SP4 (if necessary again).

Before you do this, backup (copy) your Dispatcher Downloads folder to another location. Then move or copy it back in again.

Now I haven't used TRS2004 in quite some time. There are still plenty of users out here that still use the program. They can help.

John

Thank you so much for your suggestions.
I hate reinstalling...but I had no choice (I tried everything I could think of)so I reinstalled Trs 2004 in another hard drive and copied my kuids ,etc to the new install.(including the old consist file)
The other install was 2.4 (build 2370)(is there problems with that version?) The new one is 2.4 (build 2365).
I have not installed anything from June or July yet but it does work. I even got to run a train for the first time in nearly a month. So I was elated for sure.
I wonder if there is a corrupt kuid or kuids somewhere between June 22 & July 1st. That's when my major problems started.
Even though you haven't run TRS 2004 in a while you came through for me and I greatly apprieciate your input.
Thanks again,
Bill
:)

Bill,

I'm happy you've gotten your program up in running. It's moments like this that make me feel happy. :)

I'm not sure about the versions. 2370 might be the last service pack - ie SP4, which came out I think in 2005.

You're welcome.

John

It's me again... It is TRS 2004 2.4 (build 2365) and it is now working great.
I have been adding older objects and although it comes up error when I go back to the desktop it builds a dispatcher chump file.
I wonder if all along it was downloads from outside the DLS (in blue) outside link and named instead of kuids that were the problem. There was some great downloads and some may be ok but I feel like that was the problem.
Anyone agree?
Bill
