Problem with downloading from DLS (TRS2004)

Well, I could switch over and initially my card did default to OpenGL upon installation. However, I was told that since I have an ATI card that I would be better off with DirectX. In terms of the visuals it does look better. However, since I have noticed a bit more of a framerate slowdown, I might try out OpenGL anyway perhaps there may be a slight performance shift.

I am still very fuzzy on the whole download thing, just because so much has been happening so fast. I bought "The Complete Collection" which was in 2008 a new release. It contains Trainz, UTC, TRS2004, TRS2006, and TRS2006 Routes 1-4. I bought the package in the summer time, but I had many projects brewing at that point in my life and it wasn't until now that I installed UTC first. I didn't stay with that long because UTC was buggy...so I went right to TRS2004. That program ran beautifully, but as what was pointed out here it seems like CDP was an easier way to download and given that the pros seem to outweigh the cons, I installed TRS2006 this past weekend.

I have not tried out CDP as of yet because now I am in route overload. In terms of routes TRS2006 has WAY more than TRS2004 (off the initial install). However, since I made TRS2006 a separate install, I would like to move my downloaded information from TRS2004 to 2006. Would you know how I can do that?

What I was hoping to do with CDP and TRS2006 is to also download TRS2004 info. Once it is loaded into TRS2006, I would need to know what I have to do to copy the info to TRS2004...this way I don't have to go crazy with the dependency thing I have in TRS2004. Is that doable?

Thanx,

Geo

Geo: I pretty much agree with Bob P. in the previous post as the way to go. In regard to the "dependency thing", as far as I know there is no way to avoid them unless you avoid the item that requires them. As a matter of fact, TRS 2006 will probably show more faulty or missing dependencies than TRS2004 mostly because so many assets were designed for and intended to be used with TRS2004. Please don't let that deter you from using TRS2006. Most errors are easily repaired and assistance if needed is readily available on the forums.

Hi Geo,

As far as transferring CDP files between versions, I usually do it the "other way around" (from a 2004 "CDP" folder I made), into 2006.

So 2004 can use CDP too?

The Download Helper on 2004 can do two things. One is to install the downloaded items into the Auran 2004 World folder.

Secondly, you also have a choice on the Trainz Helper screen, (if you just open it up), to have it automatically save the "raw" CDP files into an outside folder of your making. Those CDP's now can also be used as sort of a backup of all your items, But also, you can select and "import" them into other versions of Trainz, using the Content Manager of whatever version. So, you don't have to download more than once.

Ok, that part makes sense in having a single 'parent' folder that services the two programs. I am just 'fuzzy' on the how to do it part, where does everything supposed to go.

I don't actually know if it can be done by the Trainz 2006 program...into a specified CDP folder, and then into 2004. If someone tells us how to do it, then I will be learning a very useful fact also!

That is what I thought would happen, all the items would go into TRS2006 and from there I would have to (somehow) manually move the items over to TRS2004. BUT I have no idea what I am doins, soooooo.

I like that idea about using the 2006 CMP to download, and being able to "see" all the missing (or "faulty") dependencies more clearly !!

See you later! Bob P.

That is what I was thinking too, if CMP is overall 'better' then perhaps I should do the downloading with that instead of the TRS2004 Download Helper.

Oh, that wouldn't deter me from TRS2006. I think overall the only thing that I am bothered with in 2006 is the slower frame rate...and to a certain extent the steam sounds changing in volume when you pan around. Right now I JUST installed TRS2006 so I really have not played around with it much outside of the routes. I probably will not get heavy into until the weekend comes anyway. The biggest 'pro' right now is that "The Complete Collection" offers much more in terms of routes for TRS2006 (in the package), so there is plenty to do even before I start to download. But I would be interested in downloading some more steam locomotives.

Now the question remains, I have some locos that I have downloaded already which are in TRS2004, now I would like to bring those into 2006 (without re-downloading). What do I do?

Thanx,

Geo

Geo said this ---->....Now the question remains, I have some locos that I have downloaded already which are in TRS2004, now I would like to bring those into 2006 (without re-downloading). What do I do?

Bob (me) says----> Geo, if you had made a folder somewhere on your computer, named Downloaded KUIDs from 2004 (or some such thing) you would have the parts of the locos stored there right now....You should have first set the Trainz 2004 Helper (settings) to point to that folder and store the stuff there!

Then you would start up the 2006 CMP, and find whatever drop-down which says Import CDP's (or some such thing)... then you would point the 2006 CMP to that folder and "select all" or chose whatever items you want by highlighting them, then Import. Then you should click "Edit" "select all" and "Commit"

By the way, when I haven't done it for a while, I always get the terms KUID and CDP's mixed up.. I think the 2004 Downloader Helper puts the "extracted" KUIDS into its' World Folder as CDP's. I think it's a little like a .zip file that gets "extracted" into a folder. In the storage folder that you make, it stores KUID's (I think) which then have to "commited" with the 2006 CMP.

BUT... Maybe you can import CDPs also from the 2004 World folder. Try it! My head HURTS now!!! :'( This is where Trainz Objectz could come in handy because it tells you in front of your eyes, what parts are used in a certain loco!

Let's try a little harder, my boy!! Learn a bit more by yourself! Experiment! I had to !! :'( Get with the program, by golly!!! Your old buddy, Bob P.

Its all too much for me, anyway

I have all (I believe) the trainz releases, but Im dammned if I can work out that CMP thingo. Was there ever a manual or help file written for it as I need all the help in the world!!!!

Rusti,
Have you read pages 244 to 264 in the Trainz 2006 PDF manual? (Covers CMP - Contents Manager)... Geo, if your not sure where to find it, go to C:\Program Files\TRS2006\Docs\manuals_cd\manuals. (assuming you installed TRS2006 to it's default directory)...
Cheers, Mac...

Ok, but since I DIDN'T set up a Downloaded Kuids folder, where did the Download Helper put everything.

Would Trainz Objects help me with 2006 or is that only for 2004? Yeah, my head is hurting too trying to figure this out. I am certainly going to let off some steam (pun intended) on a route tonight.

Yeah, I know where the docs are...pages 244 to 264 then. Wow, a 20 page read just for downloading. I think I am in for a LONG night!

Anyway, time to try out some more routes :).

G'night fellas and thanx for the info.

cdp's

At one point (before my PC went bust and I had to buy a new one) I had 2004, TC3 and 2006 all installed on it. The latter two were on a second and much larger drive.
So then we come to downloading assets. My way is to create a 'downloads' folder on C:/ into which all downloads go straight from the DS or outside site before doing anything else.
They come in as cdp's, the little green icon. After all downloads are complete I start the first screen of 2004 and then close it. This makes this the target application for all installations. From my C:/ downloads folder I double click each asset and install into 2004.
Once done back to the Desktop and start TC3 and its CMP. Select Import cdp's from the File menu top left of the cmp screen, navigate to the C:/ folder, highlight the lot and Import. All that has to be done is Highlight again and Commit. Close TC3 cmp.
Open 2006 and its CMP and repeat.
Once all assets have been installed I transfer them all to a second or external drive and a folder I created called "Auran all assets backup" (or whatever name grabs you) and shift the downloads into that so your C:/ 'downloads' folder is empty and ready for the next day.
This way you can use the ftp option on the DS or DownloadHelperPro to access the DS, again downloading to your own folder on C:/ (or wherever you like) prior to installing as above.

Hope my method may help in some small way.

Yeah, that is what Bob was mentioning as to what he does as well.

Surely. Still it is all quite a bit to digest. Outside of just 'looking' at the content manager I really didn't do too much with it. It looks even more intimidating than the Download Helper I was using for TRS2004. I will eventually figure it out. But for the most part I was just running trains again last night. I have noticed that some of the routes in TRS2006 are pretty darn long. The open areas run pretty good, but as soon as you get to a busy station, I have that 'slow down' in frame rate.

I am going to try to mess with 2006's Surveyor this weekend, so I certainly have plenty of reading to do.

Thanx,

Geo

Hello again !!

See, here's what I stated in message number 20 (I believe in this thread)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Download Helper on 2004 can do two things. One is to install the downloaded items into the Auran 2004 World folder.

What this actually means, in the clearest of explaining, is this right here......

The Download Helper on 2004 can do two things. One (1) is to install the downloaded items into the AURAN 2004 World Folder. (which is where they are right now in many folders named with KUID numbers) !

Secondly, (Secondly) (2) ,(you also have a choice on the Trainz Helper screen, (if you just open it up), to have it automatically save the "raw" CDP files into an outside folder of your making. Those CDP's now can also be used as sort of a backup of all your items, But also, you can select and "import" them into other versions of Trainz, using the Content Manager of whatever version. So, you don't have to download more than once.

Well, I'm off for a bite to eat now! Ta-Ta !:udrool: Robert. Pardon me if I don't come back to this thread. I tend to waste my breath, it seems!
