Previous Routes as dependent assets

Now on the 20th version of my route.
Each time I change the route I save it as a new route, hence the 20th version.
In the past I have tried to remove a previous version of the route but it then shows up as an error (missing dependent asset) in the current route.
Is there a way to safely remove previous versions of the route?
They are taking up a lot of space on the computer.

Are you using the new version command in CM or are you using the obsolete table in the config.

I have never used the "new version" in CM nor the obsolete table in config. Don't know how yet.
I work on the layout and then save it as a new route with a new number etc.
If I then try to delete the older/previous version I get a "Missing asset" message.
This has happened since the original. Every new version seems to need the previous one as an "asset".
I can't delete any one because it makes an error for the next and so on.
Disabling them makes no difference.
Obviously I am not doing something properly but what?

Start Trainz then look at an old route. If it has a session go to sessions and delete it. Then come back to route and delete the route.
