Power Supply Failure During UTD Procedure

Trainz Luvr since 2004
I've recently realized I have an issue with my power supply on my machine. Power was lost once during Trainz game play which cause the Updating Trainz Database procedure to run on the next start up. Unfortunately the power was interrupted again during the UTD process and now UTD is running again.

Should I need to worry about any of my Trainz data becoming corrupted due to this?

Thanks.

What exactly do you mean "check for any faults"? Is this a separate procedure I can run? The Updating Trainz Assets Database also runs a "checking for faulty assets" if you watch it closely.

It does, but you will also need to run a search for faulty=true as well.

Shane

I assume you mean use CM... am I looking for the same "faults", errors, warnings, or red exclamation marks that are created when viewing an asset that is not up to TS2012 standards? I guess I'm asking how can I tell if an asset that is faulty now wasn't faulty before the power failure?

Once you've got the list of faulty assets, first do a revalidation (right-click, view Errors and Warnings) to sift out the false positives, then check the remaining items individually.

I have over 1,200 faulty assets. I'm guessing most of these were faulty before the power failure. I don't see any practical way of knowing without hours of work.

Is that after the revalidation process mentioned above? It's hard to tell if they were faulty before or after the power failure.

Shane

No that's before but I have over 70 gigs of content so 1,200 is a relatively small number. Also consider I have content left over all the way back to TS2004. I also checked all my personal content and all dependencies from my WIP route for over 3 years. No faulty content to be found. I don't think the power failure had any significant negative data consequences. Now I just have to figure out what's causing my power failures...

Thanks for the help Shane!

I would also recommend checking your hard drive for errors as well.

It may be that your PSU is not powerful enough to handle Trainz.

Have to ask this. Is the power supply problem fixed? as if it isn't you could have an expensive repair bill not to mention corrupted or lost data. If it's fixed run a disk check before doing anything else to repair any possible file corruption, Trainz Database repairs can't fix corrupt file systems or files.
Running with an unstable PSU could cause something to burnout such as mother board or Graphics card or the electronics on the hard drive(s) not to mention also possibly being the cause of file corruption and possibly the reason for all those faulty assets.
There is also the possibility it's the motherboard shutting down the PC due to an over or under voltage or overheating problem, needs checking if it's happened more than once.

Only way to reliably repair a power supply is to replace it with a new one.

My PSU was fine. I've been running Trainz on this machine and power supply for years. The power supply got yanked from the laptop. There might be some PSU damage on the machine, cord, or both. Windows automatically ran a disk check after restart.

Not sure yet. I haven't been able to replicate the power failure again. I suspect there might me some slight damage where the cord fits into the laptop. Move it just right and the circuit is broken. This all happened today and I need to keep a close eye on it. I've always had a lot of faulty assets carried over from TS2004 that I never updated. After validating I didn't see any of the errors mentioned above by Shane. They were all typical of errors that can be fixed from what I could tell after some investigation.

You better be worried about ALL your computer's files becoming corrupted by that unstable power supply!

Learned this lesson twice.. My lil sis cut the power to my computer and corrupted vista and I lost everything, then a wicked storm cut the power and just about totally killed the computer...

Oh please, oh please backup your data. I have seen computers eat everything in an instant. All it takes is a power hit the wrong way, and that's the end of everything. Computers don't care whether you have Trainz routes, financial data, pictures, movies, emails, etc. They all get eaten and sent to the great bit-heaven! Laptop hard drives are more prone to failure than desktops because laptops get moved around a lot. Hard drives are very, delicate, jewelry like machines that can crash easily if jarred.

So having said that get yourself a backup drive if you don't have one. I picked up a 3TB desktop drive from Seagate for about $120.00 The investment has been worth it. The smaller portable GoFlex drives are a bit more expensive, just because, but you don't need a 3TB one. I've seen 1TB portable GoFlex drives for about $80.00 on CDW.

This to me is a worthwhile investment or even a holiday gift. :)

Yea, but luckily, I do have a second hardrive.. My main HDD needs replaced as I think this is also a root cause to Vista's issues.... It is pretty old... But anyway, only what was not moved to the second HDD was lost... I hate having to re-install trainz though... But hey, gives me a second chance at screw up routes LOL (A new HDD is not the only thing I need.. I also need a new PSU, The one I got is also dying and a new GPU, as it I think is also dying..)

I regularly back up all my Trainz data which is why I started this thread. I didn't want to back up good content with corrupt content.
