PC-Express systems for running trains

NSWGR_46Class

Just call my Captain Rude
I am thinking of buying a PC from Australia company PC-Express and wanted to know if any fellow aussie have done so and what do they think of them.

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,

My current computer was built by them. I picked out all the parts after help from the forum and some researching. I emailed a list of content for a quote and they said they would build it and set everything up. They rang me about a few small problems, from memory one was they could not get the monitor I wanted and suggested a different one and it worked great. Once I got the computer I had a few questions and rang them. I was able to talk with the guy who built it and he was very helpful. As it turned out, having them build the computer was a little cheaper then just buying the parts.

All this was 6 years ago so I am not sure about now, but I found them very helpful. I am thinking of doing something similar now and even though many parts are not on their site, they should be able to get them. When I have worked out what I need, I will certainly be asking them for a quote including building it for me.

another place I am comparing everything with is i-Tech;

I also have a few other sites I found if you would like a link just let me know.

Hi Dave,

Strange coincidence that both our current Trainz machines bit the dust the same weekend ! (or maybe not, given they were made by the same 'big name' manufacturer). I am still grieving over the loss of several months Trainz work (and my stupidity at misplacing my last full backup).

I have no personal experience with PC-Express, but their desktops seem to have had consistently good reviews in Australian PC User Mag over the last couple of years. I had a look at their current options on their web site, and it looked like you could put together a pretty reasonable Trainz setup at a good price. Happy shopping !

Phil.

Its because of there reviews in PC user that I was thinking of them, plus they also get good reports in the Auscam Magazines for use as video editors.

I am looking for a desktop that will be good for video editing and also then should be quite happy to run trainz.

And it seems that for once getting a system of them is cheaper than to buy parts and build myself. Plus they also offera 3 year warrenty.

Not going for the PC express just on the grounds that the processor is only getting to its advertised speed by being over clocked = bit worried about life of the processor. Looks like the winner is a Pryon - Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 processor 4gb ram 1 Gb nvida video 1TB hdd one of the few desktop that I could find with Firewire, 64 bit windows vista, 3 years warranty $1840. Pryon are a company owned by HN, that localy assamble HP computers and sell them the operated out of Melbourne

ANother coincidence

Another strange coincidence Dave. My replacement Desktop is also a Pryon - I went for a lower spec, with an Intel Dual Core E5300 (2.6) with 2 gig and a very basic ATI 4350 graphics option (wanted fanless). It all appears to be bolted together pretty well. Went with Windows XP - I've given up on Vista for now (not that its bad, its just its plusses are not worth the imcompatabilities with some of my favourite software). Certainly the new configuration is no screamer, but it runs Weddin fine on medium performance options (appears marginally better than my old combo of Pentium 4D 3.0 , 2 Gig, 7600GT and Vista HP) , and I'm quite happy with it.
