Patching (or not) TS12 in Win 8.1

I recently bought TS12 as a direct download (build 48249). Works like a charm (driver, surveyor, and CM) except neither manual or auto-patch work. The applications run for several minutes without any screen output. When they finish (as indicated by task manager) I rerun TS12 and it still has the original build.

Has anyone successfully patched TS12 under win 8.1??

What will I lose out on if I stay at 48249. There is one small upgrade patch to 49922 and I know a lot of people refuse to go beyond 49922.

PS: I love win 8.1 but there does seem to be this incompatibility problem with the patchers.

Hi Rollerdog,

I'm currently running TS12 fully patched up to HF4 and did the patching under Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. So in confirmation, yes it works fine.

You have to ensure that you are running the patch as administrator and turn off your antivirus, or disable real-time scanning before you run the patch. Some antivirus products see the patching activity as nasty stuff and will kill the process.

By running as admin, this gives the patch permission to access files.

To run as administrator:

Right-click on the executable, and choose run as administrator.

Confirm you want to do this at the yellow-background message and let it run. The patch will run for a very long time. At some point, it may even appear to be stalled (not responding). Under no circumstances should you cancel the patch. Canceling the patch can ruin the installation and that will require a full install from scratch.

If it's the same user I've just tried to help over on my forum, they are already running the patch as administrator, and nothing appears at all when they run either the auto-patcher or the manual patch. I have a feeling myself that there is a problem with either the patch or the game.

Good possibility on this, but it could very well be lack of disk space or a failing hard drive. The patch may not have enough space to unpack its self and eventually dies (times out). I've seen this with other programs on other computers.

In any event, this user should backup his current install and try this on a fresh TS12 installation and see what happens.

Agreed. The other interesting thing, if it is indeed the same user, is that they got their copy from Amazon.

This could be another issue too, ah the plot thickens here. Is there a difference between the Amazon version and the standard installs? I'm not as familiar with the build numbers as I used to be.

John

Yes -- I have tried all those things:

1) reinstalled the download on 2 different hard drive partitions
2) run as administrator both patcher and TS12
3) turned off spyware checker & virus protection
4) plenty of free space on each partition

Yes, it is an Amazon download but the build # looks valid. Plus it tried to auto patch so it appears that N3V thought it was the correct build #.

The patcher crashes in every case after 2-3 minutes and never a single character of screen output.

The key thing to me is that there is never any output at all -- it is why I feel the problem is in the patcher and not the software being patched.

If you guys have any other ideas let me know and I will try them --
