Patching and restore points

Hello all,

I've decided to patch my version of TS2010 up from build 3.3 with the relevant service pack. Is Trainz the type of program that a restore point will restore if some accident occurs during the patching process? I also will be making a complete backup of the data and program before attempting the patch. Answers will be greatly appreciated.

Just a worry wart trying to cover all bases,

Bernie

Hi Bernie,

I don't think Trainz does any system restore points prior to patching. Your best bet is to do a full backup of your Trainz installation to another location prior to patching. If things go tits up you can simply delete the updated version and restore your old one.

John, that's reassurance enough for me. Thank you. The b/u is in progress, all half million files worth .

Thanks...

Been there and done that a few times myself recently due to some system issues.

In fact my last backup saved me on Monday. I was going to startup Trainz when I heard Click, click, click followed by some buzzing and more clicking, and my icon turned white! The drive that contained Trainz, documents, and other stuff died suddenly! I replaced the drive with a new one and did a 4-hour data copy from the backup to the new drive. All is happy now and the system is much happier it seems.

Backups are a truly under estimated thing until they are needed the most. :)

John-

I had Trainz 12 installed on an external hard drive. 500 GB dedicated solely to Trainz. Well one day, I dropped it, I plugged it in and all seemed well. As soon as I tried to start Trainz. An error message popped up saying "The directory that Trainz.ink is missing" or something of the likes. Turns out the drop corrupted the drive. Lost my Trainz installation, and all of my content, and I only had it working for a year. I had to start over from the beginning.... with TS10. I actually prefer TS10 over 12.

It is done. But, a question remains in my little mind.

This morning when I woke up I had TS2010 build 44088. I now am the proud owner of TS2010 build 49933. Whereas my backup took a number of hours and nearly choked my portable HD, the patch took about 5 minutes. "Splendid," you say, but wait. I started out with CM version 3.3 and still have CM version 3.3, although I fully expected to have version 3.4. That change was the main reason I wanted to do the installation of the 44088 - 49933 to begin with; multiplayer not being an issue with me. As it is I have Trainz telling me: 1) There are no updates for my version, 2) There are 45 content updates available, and 3) because CM will not recognize the 3.4 build number I can't access them. I could download the items in TS12, then change the build to 3.3, but is there a way to get CM version 3.4? I can find nothing amongst all the hot fixes and service packs that pertain to 49933. It's not a big deal but it would be nice to be able to do it directly.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bernie

There's a reason why that's happened. Trainz-build 3.4 is build 49938. You can only get this my installing the Multiplayer Beta patches from 44088, but this has other effects including the loss of the in-game compatibility mode.

Thank you, Shane. I kinda thought that was how things were set up but it didn't seem logical. I appreciate the confirmation and will live with it. It's just a minor annoyance.
